If the person is Catholic, I'm quite certain they know the purpose of fasting, as well as the meaning of Lent. Those of us who've attended Catholic schools are well-educated in our schools, and those of us who were born into Catholic families most often began observing Lent and giving up something important to us for Lent, as toddlers.
