Newport Central Catholic will come to Greendevil Stadium to face Dayton next Friday night at 7 pm. NCC has played a tougher schedule and comes in with a 2-5 record, winning their first district game against Newport 17-6. Dayton hasn’t played the toughest schedule but has beaten everyone they have faced impressively for the most part, including a 42-6 win over their district rival Bellevue tonight.

I believe that this game is for the district for which team wins. This is undoubtedly Dayton’s biggest regular season game that they have had in a very long time.

Thoughts about this game and who wins?

Big time game here for Dayton to make a statement. I can’t wait to here updates from this one.

Only four wins ever for Dayton against Newport Catholic and none since 1998 (the others were twice in 1996 and a no doubt memorable affair in 1935). I would love to see the Greendevils pull it out!

November 29, 1935 newspaper clipping from The Kentucky Post. Nineteen (!) punts would have been brutal to watch, although those late game "aerial thrusts" by Newport Catholic were at least worthy of mention in the paper!

Another article from Dayton's 1935 win over Newport Catholic, this from The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Thanks for posting the old articles, I enjoy seeing things like this and more, especially with local or area history.

It’s pretty crazy to think about how Dayton hasn’t beaten NCC since 1998. While Dayton had a good amount of teams over the years since 1998 that really struggled, it also says how good a program is to have lost that many games to them consecutively, and before 1996 too.

With saying that, Dayton has a good chance to end their losing streak to NCC the coming Friday evening in my opinion. One thing I can say is that their confidence has grown weekly since the beginning of the season and they have looked better in their progression of the season too.

Got to go with my old buddies (Barth, Siereveld, Johnson, Dingus and those terrors the Ferguson brothers) and root for the Green Devils.

Game of the year for both these teams. NCC needs this win as much as Dayton does. It has more historical importance for Dayton, but for this year NCC may need this win more than Dayton.

Prior to the move 1A, the two didn’t play very often I believe. I think from at last 68-91 they didn’t. Then NewCath was moved to AA when they went to 6 classes and they stopped.

Nice to be a member of a team the lost to them twice in ‘96 and needed a last second TD to win in ‘97. Ridder was the man and his defensive coaches always had our number.

A win for Dayton would be huge for the program. But I agree New Cath needs this win for its program too. It would also keep the 1A King of the North.

I agree with you from the point of history with Dayton for sure. I can also see this as big, if not bigger for them in terms of the present or the moment because of how they have played most of their season.

This game is WAY more important for Dayton. They have, maybe, their best offensive player ever and a really good skill group. If they don’t beat NewCath this year, they may not get another chance.

NewCath is 2-3 years away from being a Top 3 1A team again. Right now is about getting better every game and setting a tone going forward. Class sizes are increasing, players want to play for TB.

Regardless of talent, this is a game that Dayton needs to play cleanly and more disciplined. They have shown that they can, I believe it’s extra important this game.
