We sat around with the boys, laid out all the tea leaves, and looked at the current RPI rankings. If the football gods have a script, they’re setting up a Highlands vs. Boyle County with Seneca Driver rematch in the state semifinals, with a trip to Kroger Field on the line in December. 👀🏈

Here’s how we see it playing out and I think it holds true:

  • Paducah Tilghman stays at No. 1.

  • However the rankings shake out, Highlands, Boyle County and Ashland will be the next three.

  • Ashland takes a loss, leaving Highlands either traveling to Boyle County or hosting Corbin in the semis.

The pieces are there. Now let’s see how the final weeks of the regular season play out.

The whole Ohio thing is tough for the Birds.

Unfortunately, there is no "you played really well against a quality school" bump for their RPI against Elder. I have been pretty outspoken about this...but I would stop scheduling Ohio teams forever...or at least until something is changed in regards to RPI.

If games like this meant the difference between getting in the playoffs or not getting in, I would agree with you. However, this game is a GREAT game for Highlands, the Birds are "battle-tested" and properly prepared to win 4A.

This is a very good post! However, I don’t believe that Corbin, Highlands and Boyle can all be in the semis. I believe there would need to be a 2nd team from Districts 1-4. But someone correct me if I’m mistaken.

If Boyle wins out and that means they have to beat Frederick Douglas at home their final game. then they would be the number one seed in 4A.

You are correct. 2 teams from 1-4, 2 teams from 5-8.

So if the RPI held steady as today (and Boyle & Highlands make it from 5-8) then it would be North Oldham at PT and Highlands at Boyle in the semis.

But if Country is correct and Boyle beats Frederick Douglass and leapfrogs PT in the RPI then it would be North Oldham at Boyle and Highlands at PT.

Upsets happen almost every year so lots can happen between now and then.

I hope "we" avoid Boyle and Highlands matching up before the finals.

I have a lot of respect for Boyle but I think the chances of them beating Freddy D are not good.

I think some people are still looking at the Highlands debacle and judging Boyle on that game too much. Boyle is in no way the same team people saw early. They have most of their injured players back, some key additions on both sides of the ball. Playing FD at home should also be an advantage. I am giving the nod to Boyle in this one , although most are rating it as a toss up.

Fair. Would it be worth it though to lose an extra home playoff game?
