  • As a Beechwood fan I will take that with no complaints.

I would say the 3rd/4th rounds would look like this in the WEST: LCA at Catholic Mayfield at Somerset Winners play each other Round 4 I think Round 4 in the EAST would look like Belfry vs. Beechwood

True. To that end, if you think there is a clear top three, then finishing #1 is an advantage because you will only play 1 of the top 2. If you are the 2 seed, you could possibly face both #3 and #1 i

How KHSAA Football RPI is Calculated

The Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) is used to help determine postseason standings and rankings. A team's overall RPI is calculated by averaging the individual game RPIs accumulated across all regular-season games.

For any single game, the formula is:

$$\text{Game RPI} = \text{Game Result (GR)} \times [(0.35 \times \text{WP}) + (0.35 \times \text{OWP}) + (0.30 \times \text{OOWP})]$$

1. Core Formula Components

  • Game Result (GR):

    • Win = 1.0

    • Tie = 0.5

    • Loss = 0.0

  • WP (Winning Percentage): Your team's winning percentage. For in-state games, this is adjusted based on school classifications (see Class Weighting below).

  • OWP (Opponents' Winning Percentage): The average winning percentage of all your opponents (excluding games played against your team).

  • OOWP (Opponents' Opponents' Winning Percentage): The average winning percentage of all your opponents' opponents.

  • Weights: The formula places a 35% weight on WP, 35% on OWP, and 30% on OOWP.

2. In-State Class Weighting (Game Values)

In Kentucky high school football, winning against different class sizes impacts your WP calculation through designated Class Game Values (KV):

Class

Game Value (KV)

1A

1.323

2A

1.521

3A

1.749

4A

2.011

5A

2.313

6A

2.660

How Winning Percentage (WP) is Adjusted for Wins:

When you win a game, your WP contribution for that specific game is scaled by the ratio of classifications:

$$\text{WP Value for a Win} = \frac{\text{Opponent's Class Game Value}}{\text{Your Team's Class Game Value}}$$

  • Beating a larger school: Your WP value scales above 1.0 (rewarding the tougher matchup).

  • Beating a school in your own class: Your WP value equals 1.0.

  • Beating a smaller school: Your WP value scales below 1.0.

  • Losses/Ties: A loss results in a 0.0 contribution to your WP for that game's calculation, regardless of classification size.

The big picture: every team gets three numbers, and the RPI is a weighted blend of them. The team’s own winning percentage (WP) counts for 35 percent, its opponents’ winning percentage (OWP) counts for 35 percent, and its opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage (OOWP) counts for 30 percent. So 65 percent of the rating comes from who you played, not just what you did against them. Margin of victory does not matter at all.

Step one is the value of each game. A loss is worth 0 and a tie is worth half a win. A win starts at 1, but in football it gets adjusted by class. Every class has a weight: 1A is 1.323, 2A is 1.521, 3A is 1.749, 4A is 2.011, 5A is 2.313 and 6A is 2.660. Each step up is roughly 15 percent bigger. For a win, you divide the opponent’s class weight by your own class weight. A 4A team that beats a 5A team gets 2.313 divided by 2.011, which is 1.15017 for that game. The same 4A team beating a 3A team gets 1.749 divided by 2.011, which is 0.86972. Beating a bigger school is worth more than 1, and beating a smaller one is worth less than 1. If the opponent is out of state or has no Kentucky class, they are treated as the same class as you, so the win is worth a plain 1.

Step two is the team’s own WP. Add up the values of all the games and divide by the number of games. Because of the class weights, a WP can be higher than 1.000, and so can OWP, OOWP and the RPI itself.

Step three is OWP. Take each opponent and work out their WP the same way, using the same class weights. The one twist is that the game against the team being rated is thrown out of that opponent’s record. If you beat a team, that win does not drag their record down, and if you lost to them, it does not inflate theirs. Then average the WPs of all your opponents. For out-of-state or non-KHSAA opponents, KHSAA does not have full records, so a fixed value is plugged in. The current page lists that football value as .51060. The 2018 example used .500.

Step four is OOWP. For each of your opponents, work out their own OWP, meaning the average WP of the teams they played, again leaving out the game between that opponent and each of their opponents. Then average those OWP numbers across all of your opponents. One detail from the example is worth knowing. Your own games still count inside your opponents’ opponents’ records, except for the specific game being excluded in each calculation. For example, when KHSAA works out Raceland’s OWP for Ashland Blazer’s OOWP, Ashland Blazer shows up as one of Raceland’s opponents, and Greenup County’s record still includes its game against Ashland Blazer. Only the Raceland vs. Greenup game is removed from Greenup’s record there.

Step five is the final blend. In the 2018 Ashland Blazer example, the WP was 0.86778, the OWP was 0.58728 and the OOWP was 0.55510. That works out to (0.86778 times .35) plus (0.58728 times .35) plus (0.55510 times .30), which gives a final RPI of 0.67580.

A few rule details from the current page. Teams can play 10 games in the 11-week season. Forfeits count like any other game. Rankings update hourly, but a team is not calculated if it has missing scores from earlier games. RPI is used for district tiebreakers, for deciding seeded district games that cannot be played, and for bracketing in the third, fourth and fifth rounds of the football playoffs. Starting in 2023, a team’s first two games against smaller-class opponents are treated as if both teams were in the same class, so those wins are not discounted. After those two, the discount applies. In the OWP and OOWP calculations there is no such exemption, so the class weights are always applied there. The 2018 PDF predates that change, so keep that in mind if you compare it to current numbers.

One other note from the 2018 PDF is that 6-player games had a baseline weight of 1.0 and 8-player games had a weight of 1.15. The numbers in the example for non-class schools like Jenkins and Grant County reflect that.

How KHSAA Football RPI Is Calculated

The KHSAA Football Ratings Percentage Index, or RPI, measures three things: a team's own performance, the performance of its opponents, and the performance of its opponents' opponents.

The system also adjusts for the classifications of the teams playing each other.

1. TEAM PERFORMANCE

A team's own results account for 35 percent of its RPI. Wins, losses, and ties determine its performance, with additional adjustments for opponent classification.

2. OPPONENT PERFORMANCE

The results of a team's opponents account for 35 percent of its RPI.

The KHSAA calculates each opponent's winning percentage, excluding the game played against the team being evaluated. This prevents that game from directly affecting the opponent's record used in this part of the calculation.

3. OPPONENTS' OPPONENTS

The results of a team's opponents' opponents account for 30 percent of its RPI.

This measures the strength of the schedules played by the teams on your schedule. It provides another way to account for the quality of competition faced.

4. CLASSIFICATION ADJUSTMENTS

Kentucky football has six classifications, from Class 1A through Class 6A. The RPI system assigns a numerical weight to each class.

Generally, playing a higher-class opponent can increase the value assigned to a result, while playing a lower-class opponent can reduce it.

The first two games against lower-class opponents receive special treatment under the rules introduced in 2023. Those games are exempt from the lower-class adjustment in the applicable calculations.

5. OUT-OF-STATE OPPONENTS

The KHSAA uses a designated winning-percentage value for opponents that are not KHSAA member schools. This allows those opponents to be included in the calculations even when comparable Kentucky records are unavailable.

6. POINT DIFFERENTIAL

The margin of victory does not matter. A one-point win and a 50-point win count the same as a win. Running up the score does not improve a team's RPI.

7. WHAT THIS MEANS

A team's RPI depends on more than its own record. The records of its opponents and the schedules played by those opponents also matter.

Two teams with identical records can have different RPIs because they played different schedules, faced teams from different classifications, or benefited from different results elsewhere in their opponents' schedules.

BOTTOM LINE

KHSAA Football RPI combines a team's performance, its opponents' performance, its opponents' opponents' performance, and classification adjustments. It is a mathematical system designed to account for both winning and strength of schedule, rather than simply ranking teams by their win-loss records.

Looking at last year's RPI and what happened after the last game last year, I expect the top 4 to stay right were they are. The top 4 are playing the same opponents they played last year. At first glance, it looks like Beechwood would pass Owensboro Catholic since Beechwood plays a 6A school and O Cath plays a 4A school. But last year playing the same final game opponents, Beechwood gained no ground on O Cath. It is very close this year so I won't be surprised if Beechwood is able to move ahead of O Cath but last year's results say O Cath stays at #2. All this is assuming the top 4 all win their final game.

That doesn't make sense to me because last year Beechwood lost to CovCath and they beat CCH this year.

Last year heading into the last game of the season Beechwood was 6th in RPI. This year, likely because of the CCH win, they are in a close 3rd.

Another failure by Arbiter. Previously you could drill down into a team's RPI and see the scoring details game by game. I cannot find a way to get to the detailed numbers with Arbiter.
