John Edwards House: Why Do We Care?

Featured Replies

A politician's tax code change, a raise in the minumim wage and restructuring import export laws are just a few things that reach a heck of a lot more people than the great work that the charities can provide.
Arizona is already reporting layoffs of many teens because of their minimum wage increase. And they only increased it to $6.75.

Oh, come now, Dad. Nancy & Co. came to our salvation and increased the minimum wage! Poverty is over! We can all afford college and mortgages now!

Well, I'm not Catholic, and I'm not really certain that I buy into "sainthood", but I CAN say (unequivocally) that Mother Teresa was in very rare company, in terms of her impact on the lives of the poor.

Let's call her the Babe Ruth of charity.

:D You sir are correct. I'm up to my elbows right now in paperwork as I'm sure you are too.

I believe that EVERY lawyer uses the facts, evidence and supporting data that present their cases in a favorable light. That's exactly what they're paid to do by their clients, whether they be the prosecution or the defense.

So, because Edwards was able to provide more convincing evidence and facts, he's somehow a less-than-honorable attorney? If it were you, and one of those cases were your child, would you want an attorney like him representing your case?

I don't believe that the secret to Edwards' success was presenting more convincing evidence and facts. IMHO, the secret to his success was his ability to focus the jury's attention away from the actual facts of the case and direct it toward the emotion and human tragedy.

Emotional appeal and human tragedy have always played an important role in trials from the beginning of time, and always will. Prosecutors prey mercilessly upon emotion and prejudice of juries rather than facts or common sense and obtain convictions on a daily basis, yet noone faults them. Emotion and human tragedy ARE part of the facts in evidence.

I still have not read anything about John Edwards that leads me to believe anything other than that he was an excellent trial lawyer.

Which is why I'm opposed to jury trials.

I'm choking to death. Subject of another thread.

The world's axis is a little off kilter-You and I are agreeing on every point in this thread!

I am guessing here, but Hilary Clinton probably has more money.

Wasn't Obama editor in chief of Harvard's Law Review?

None of the Democratic 3 are exactly the "common man/woman" but Edwards has some standing. He did claw his way to the top. He might not be poor, but he has lived a middle class life and understands what that entails.

In my book, Edwards has the standing to legitimately speak about the problems affecting the middle class and working poor.
