5th Region: Week 5

Featured Replies

Another week, another #1 team. I’ll admit up front, I’m not 100 percent on these rankings for this week, from top to bottom. However, with Christmas tournaments over, and the schedule of more games with regional competition, we should over the next couple of weeks get a much clearer picture of what the 5th Region looks like.

Adair County had a solid week and got a huge district win against Taylor, 82-80 in a great basketball game. The trio of Tylin George, Dawson Gilbert and Landon Blakey combined for 73 of Adair’s 82 points. The Indians followed up that win with another win the next day against Barren County.

Taylor County was the team of tough luck this week. But they played 2 great games. The aforementioned loss to Adair County on Friday night and then a 4-overtime loss to Henderson County the next day.

Caverna had a nice win against Fairdale on Saturday, that ended a 2-game skid from the White, Greer, Maggard Holiday Classic. They lost their last game in that tournament to Bryan Station 49-50.

Larue County is the first team to hit double-digits in the win column. They sit at 10-3 coming into this week. While the competition may not have been what some other teams have played, they have played solid basketball and they’re getting the most out of players like Mikie Harris, Cole Miller and Owen McDowell.

Don’t look now, but the longest winning streak in the region belongs to Nelson County. What a remarkable month the Cardinals had. They have already surpassed their win total from last season. Jordan Gilbert has the Cardinals looking to make noise in 2026.

North Hardin has established themselves as the dominant team in the 17th District. The Trojans had a solidly convincing win at Central Hardin on Friday night, winning by 22 points. I thought North was the better of the 2 teams but didn’t think they were 22 points better. Just an overwhelming performance for the Trojans. And by the way, Keriawn Berry is set to make his debut with the team this week.

Of note this week: Caverna, Bethlehem, Green County, Campbellsville, Washington County and Fort Knox will all be participating in the Class A tournament. While Adair County, Taylor County, Larue County, Nelson County, Marion County, Thomas Nelson, and John Hardin are participating in the 2A sectionals.

District games:
17th District- Elizabethtown at North Hardin, Elizabethtown at Central Hardin.
18th District: Hart County at Caverna
19th District: Thomas Nelson at Nelson County
20th District: No Games

Here's this week’s rankings:

Team, Record, Current Streak

1.  Adair County 9-3, W4

2. Taylor County, 9-6, L2

3. Larue County, 10-3, W4

4. Caverna 7-5, W1

5. North Hardin, 6-4, W1

6. Nelson County, 9-2, W6

7. Central Hardin, 8-5, L1

8. Marion County, 8-4, L1

9. Bethlehem, 6-4, L1

10. Thomas Nelson, 6-7, W2

11. Elizabethtown, 5-7, L2

Great write-up! Appreciate it! We will see what happens with N Hardin when Berry starts playing! They could become dominant! Things could get interesting if Adair and Taylor meet up again so soon in 2A sectional. I think  when everything sorts out Adair, Taylor, N Hardin and Caverna in no particular order are the top 4 teams then gap to Larue.

Great write up as always, and yes things should begin to shake out in the next couple of weeks we will know who are the contenders and who are the pretenders.

Watched Adair and Russell County on Hudl last night. Great game Adair pulled out in 2OT without Tyler George. . I noticed he was on the bench in street clothes. Is he having to serve the 2 game suspension that was overturned after all or was he injured/sick? anyone know?

Breeze said post game that “it was a complete program malfunction”

He was referencing uniforms. Apparently George forgot his uniform and the staff forgot to pack the extra blood uniforms so he was left without one to wear and Breeze stated post game and I’m paraphrasing, that he wasn’t allowing them take a uniform from a player on the bench that doesn’t play many or any minutes that brought their uniform to give to a player who forgot theirs so all parties would take responsibility and live with the results.

Fortunately they won and advanced.

Wow!  Good for Coach Breeze and teaching responsibility to these young men!

Adair just finished off an impressive 8 days going 4-0 with 82-80 and 63-60 victories over Taylor County sandwiched around a win over Russell Co and a very impressive win over Larue County.
