  • I would say the best coaches do more with less. Several of these coaches, who are no doubt great coaches, are also the beneficiaries of Jimmies and Joes and years of program success.

  • Ganaway first year as HC at Owensboro - state championshiop... excellent job...somehow not on the list?

  • All great coaches but my three finalist would probably be: Damarcus Ganaway Sr. - Owensboro Matthew Jones - Kentucky Country Day Oakley Watkins - Lexington Christian Academy

Let me put on my helmet and flack jacket before typing this...

I'll say this about the Trinity slight regarding Coach of the Year:

What Betty did at T and the level he took that already proud program to are deserving of the accolades heaped upon him. The job Cobb has done, being the guy that follows THE guy, has been a masterclass in keeping the train on the tracks and rolling downhill. Both of these coaches have demonstrated an uncanny ability to navigate the intricacies of the flagship program of KY High School Football, including the school, its community, and its expectations, which requires a masterful skill set.

BUT...

I don't think most of us believe that Trinity's coaches, Betty or Cobb, would win as Smith has at South if they were at a public school. In fact, from their time at public schools in Missouri and Kentucky, we know they did not.

In years when you have several deserving public school coaches, folks are simply not going to vote for Private school coaches for COY.

Best Coach in the State is supposed to win the award and how anyone could even attempt to create an argument against Coach Smith and his Spartans is beyond me. I despise the school in the South as much as anyone, but you cannot deny the results and consistency they show yearly. The question for me is how long can the Spartans continue to hold onto this gem? Know they take care of their own but I have a hard time believing he isn’t getting calls from out of state that may pose a better opportunity on a national scale, but he seems to enjoy life here in Bowling Green and what he has helped create for their community is top tier in our State.

From SWHS Spartans Football.

Chip Off The Old Block!

My TCOP picks from our 12/11 Episode:

Class A:
Matt Jones - KCD (changed his offense from spread to triple to fit talent)

Class 2A:
Steve Stonebraker- Danville (restoring Admirals)

Class 3A:
Kyle Niederman- Lloyd (getting the Juggs back to the top of KY HS Football)

Class 4A:
Luke Salmons - Corbin (win at Highlands; Boyle's toughest game; his response to a TOUGH break)

Class 5A:
DeMarcus Ganaway - Owensboro  (1st state title since 1986)

Class 6A:
Brandon Smith - South Warren (very successful transition to 6A; great plan for Trinity)

Brandon Smith was overall COY for both Chuck Smith & myself. It was awkward for Chuck to go with Brandon, but we were both impressed w/ the transition to 6A and the plan/effort vs. a special Trinity team.
