Open Job: Montgomery County

This is a sneaky good job. Winnable district, decent facilities, and good resources. Agree that Phillip Stockdale should be the first call.

  • Here is a BGPreps memory.... can't remember what year. But, I was the coach at Mason. The Montgomery job was open. Stephanie and I saw no one on campus other than the AD we met with to discuss the job

  • My first and only call would be to Phillip Stockdale. Listen to the man, give him whatever he needs. He's from the area, and is a guy who has several years under his belt in the game. This would be a

Outside looking in. 1 school in county, 5A District 7, nice facilities and financial support. Egli had some success here. I think if they get the right fit here lots of upside potential. Obviously anything takes a little time.

Paul Rains was the last coach to win a region title there, back in '95. Since then? They've played in just one (Egli's '17 team).

Total playoff wins since '98? Five (Gooch-2, Egli- 3)

Overall program record since '98? 115-179 (39% wins)

Coaches since '98:

Bill Letton- '98-'02- went 18-29 (38%)

- Letton later takes over for Bob Sphire at LexCath, and then proceeds to go 80-25, play in 8 Straight Region Titles, 4 State Semis and WIN 1 State Title

Dean Cvitkovic- '03 & '04- 2-18 (10%)

Dan Gooch- '05-'15- 54-66 (45%)

- Two Playoff wins

- Five winning seasons

Jamie Egli- '16-'21  27-36 (42%)

- Three Playoff wins (most of any coach there since '98)

- Only Region Title appearance since '98

- Only 10 win season since '98

- Only 9 win season since '98

- He was ALSO let go after going 6-21 from '19-'21, which also saw Montogmery Co. placed in a district with Scott County, Frederick Douglass and Great Crossing. Of which 11 of 27 games those 3 years were against those three teams, alone.

Michael Caba '22-'25  14-30 (31%)

- '24 best season 5-6

...another one of these places where any flashes of success(es) for coaches says so much more than their "failures".

I agree with you. I think this is a little different job than the last time it was open though with district now. But Montgomery seems to be their own worst enemy. Obviously still have to have the dudes to compete and admin support. Seems like they figured it out in bball but that’s a whole different animal.

Maybe so, and for the new coach + program, I hope so...but, the previous (almost) three decades say otherwise (and, they've been in this current district alignment since '23).

I definitely agree with the bolded. Every coach since '98 has had MULTIPLE 0-3 win seasons during their respected tenures, including the one who finished 11 games below .500 yet went onto play in 8 straight region finals + winning it all at his next job (Letton)...as well as Egli, who, despite his last three years their, took them to heights they've not seen since '95 (and, he was let go).

The Letton thing is wild and he’s from Mt. Sterling! I thought the last hire was let’s say interesting….looks kinda like a total rebuild from here.

There is a state championship coach next door in a rival 6A school…I’ll be surprised if they don’t at least try to make an attempt…this could get interesting.

I expect current Bath coach Brandon Brewer to be interested. He was an assistant there previously and MoCo is a better job than Bath.

The facilities are nice at MoCo. There is a lot of money from within the program, but it takes Jimmy's and Joe's.

Lot of rumors an arch rival coach may be the next man in Mt. Sterling.

Wow didn’t realize Pat Dale came from Danville. Chili Ishmael was in state finals in 67’ and won it in 69’ with the old Mt Sterling Trojans. Came back and had consolidated Montgomery co in region finals in 86 and 87. Believe they’ve won regions in 77,86,87,95,96. Dan Gooch was a pretty good coach too probably doesn’t get enough credit per the record but they were def in dire straits when he showed up.

Got to believe the Jimmys and Joes are walking those hallways.  The school is too big, the facilities are there, the tradition ran rampant in the old Mt. Sterling days before the merger… where or why are those athletes not carrying on in bigger ways?

Can't help but to think that consolidation years ago hurt football more than it helped.

Took Mt. Sterling, who ironically, was at their peak the 6-8 years prior and then combined with two other non football playing school's/communities within the county.

I'd say what's going on there, is like what's going on at many other's like them.

In this case, it's Mt. Sterling Football at Montgomery County High School.

Are there any coaches in the surrounding area that may be interested in this job?
