Greenup County will travel up to Fort Thomas, Ky this Friday night to face the 4A powerhouse Highlands Bluebirds at 7pm.

Greenup County comes in with a record of 4-6, they actually know how to score some points averaging 26.8 points a game and giving up 28.2 points a game.  It looks to me like they might have only been the victim of a running clock against Boyd County when they lost 49-7.

Junior Jasper Davis is QB1, he as a few weapons that he likes to throw the ball with 3 receivers having over 200 yards in the season.  He also is the leading rusher carrying the ball 133 times for 598 yards to season.

Greenup County must be very young, I don't see many Seniors on the stat sheet at all, except their leading receiver Kasey Gammon.

Highlands comes in ready to roll, having a nice week off with their normal Bye week they typically have prior to the Playoff season.  I am looking forward to a nice clean, crisp game for us to take care of business.  We know the names, we have heard them all season long....Let's get to work!

The young men from Greenup will play with pride but this will be a typical first round game. Greenup's best effort against a step up in talent was against Ashland who had four turnovers but still managed a comfortable win. Ashland is not Highlands this year. Their only game against a team at the same level as Highlands was Johnson Central which was a blowout. This one gets ugly quick.

Back in the 90s Greenup’s uniforms were almost identical to the Green Bay Packers uniforms. I was disappointed when I looked them up and they don’t do that anymore.

I think this one will be over rather quickly. The Bluebirds just have too much talent for Greenup County. The schedule the played have them positioned for a deep run.

Some fun Greenup County trivia.  Greenup County was created in 1973 by consolidating three schools, two being pretty strong athletically.  McKell High School, Wurtland High School and Greenup High School.  That is where  the mascot, the Musketeers, came from, a play on the "three" Musketeers representing the three consolidated schools.

McKell graduate, Don Gullett, still holds the single game scoring record in Kentucky with 77 points scored in a single high school football game.  Gullett was a RB and the place kicker, he scored 11 TDs and kicked all 11 extra points.  Gullett set this record against Wurtland High School, the county rival.  Gullett was a phenomenal athlete in football, basketball and obviously baseball after having a great MLB career as a pitcher and coach for the Cincinnati Reds.

Also, the Greenup County school colors represent the three schools.  Greenup High School was Green and White.  McKell was Blue and Gold.  And Wurtland was Black and White.  Greenup County is Green, Gold, and Black.
