The battle of the Fireman’s bell kicks off Friday when Newport takes on NewCath. NewCath has won the last 25 years straight. Newport coming off a bye while NewCath imposed a solid running attack last week to best Campbell Co. Seems like NewCath may be figuring it out just at the right time. Who you got in this one? 

I remember reading the NKY Post on that Thursday in 1997. It read “Newports lost 13 years in a row, the streak has to end some time”. It ended the next night and the next two meetings. Streaks  are meant to be broken. The Breds better be on their A game.

Coach Lucas not only saved the football program at Newport, he revitalized it, and made them a 2A player. They beat Beechwood in 1999 at Newport in a classic.

I was at that game, my cousin played for Newport that season and they were very talented. I was very surprised that Newport exited the playoffs as early as they did that season.

This is probably one of the more interesting 1A games this coming Friday. Either winning wouldn’t surprise me. Good luck to both teams.

The hope was, but as of now I do not believe so.

No. Original timeline was this week to be the first game played on it. Man, that would have been phenomenal for the whole city. I think now, if they can even get a chance to practice on the field this year it would be a success. Last I heard, completion set for some time in December.

If NewCath comes out and plays their A game, It's another running clock. If they come out like they did earlier in the season, I could see it closer. Turnovers can haunt in games like these.

I agree. That 1997 game NCC threw 2 Pick 6s. NewCath played mean and angry Friday night. The effort and attitude have been there the past two games and even in the first quarter of the Beechwood game.

They have waited alllllll these years so what's a couple more months. But this week would have been a very cool week for it. I hope when it does open there is something strategic and special scheduled for the first game, opponent wise. Alot of tradition that will be in the house that night for sure.

I was really high on Newport after their win against Paris and having previously beaten Ludlow. But I had some too high expectations going into that Sayre game and they were blanked. So while I think Newport is on their way to building the program back up, I think NewCath has found another gear. They came with some attitude in that Raceland game that, while they lost, showed some fire that I think carried into the Campbell County win. I think they will get right through district play and will be healthy and on a winning streak that will carry all the way to 3rd round of the playoffs where they have met their fate in recent years.
