Newport Central Catholic 28 Campbell County 21

Final.  Big win for NCC.

What a win for the Breds but a crazy ending to a back and forth game. Breds recover an onside kick then drive down to take a 28-14 lead. Then Camels score to make it 28-21. Onside kick, penalty called against the Camels for something (Referee didn’t signal) Breds recovered. Some reason 15 yard penalty was marked off and Camel got to re-kick. I’m not sure of the rules on that. Breds recover the next one and kneel it out. A very much needed win in a hard fought game.

From my understanding, they called a hit on a “defenseless player.” Right call just didn’t enforce it correct! NCC had the option.

Nice win Newport Central Catholic, congratulations.

Tough game all around. Refs lost control of the game. It might have been because the White Hat was an ex CC employee.

There is no way you believe that is the case at all. The after party said there were two 15 yard penalties on that onside kick by CC. I thought the hit on the first kick was just a hard hit. We still don’t know why since NewCath recovered it, why the Camels had the option to try again. If the CC was an ex-employee, are you saying he was willing to gift the game to the Camels? Lickert was irate with the re-kick, which means so were the fans. I wasn’t mad just confused. I’m trying to find the actual rule in this situation.

Refs totally goofed up the end of the game. They know it. I hope they own it to whoever they need to. Breds controlled the ball and sustained long drives the entire game. Hard fought by both teams. If NC doesn’t turn ball over twice inside CC 20…the game is not as close as it was.

Please explain the “goof up”

Fan perspective: CC tries an onside with roughly 23 seconds left. NC clearly covers the ball. After the player took a knee,  there was a dead ball personal foul called on CC for blatantly hitting well after the NC player recovered and took a knee. Multiple refs threw a flag. White hat signals personal foul. Instead of giving NC the ball and tacking on the penalty, they actually assess the penalty (back CC up) and allow CC to rekick, and give them another chance to recover their own kickoff. I won’t claim to know every single rule, but how does a team commit a personal foul penalty and get another chance to recover an. onside kick?  People in the stands were going wild and imo rightfully so. I hope someone owns the mistake and at least apologizes.
disclaimer: I have absolutely no idea the explanation given to Lickert on the sideline…but judging his reaction…if he could have thrown a flag”BS” flag on the refs…he would have.

Reading previous responses after my comment. If the flags were thrown because of “defenseless” and not on the kid who took a knee..I may be inaccurate. But no coach would choose to have  the opposing team rekick. That’s laughable, and witnessing Lickert’s reaction….he was never given a choice.

That’s fine, read my statement farther up. Yes the officials got it right. No one ever took a knee, a defenseless player was hit while fielding the ball. No one needs to apologize. The reason the re-kick is, I assume NCC accepted the penalty. The ruling was right.

If this is all assumptions that NCC chose to re-kick, why was Lickert so irate on the sideline? The first player for NCC to contact the ball got hit very hard, clean in my opinion, and the ball went to another NCC player who got control of the ball and went down. Once NCC did that it's their ball regardless of the penalty on Campbell Co. Unless Lickert misunderstood the explanation from the R, there should've been no reason to re-kick since one penalty was live ball on CC and one was a dead ball foul on CC.

Campbell Co has a hudl page you can view the game. Go to the 2hr 7 minute mark to see the situation in question. Again I just want to know how the scenario played out because there is zero coach in the football world who would let the opposing team re-kick an onside kick with the opponent only down one score.

Agree to disagree. We covered the ball. The play doesn’t stop when a penalty occurs. NCC deserves an apology from the crew imo. You’re allowed to have yours.
