1976 Lloyd Memorial High School Juggernauts

Does anyone remember the excitement for the community?  In the fall of 1976, the Lloyd Memorial High School Juggernauts won their second State Football championship, defeating Shelby County 24-0 at the University of Kentucky’s Commonwealth Stadium.  Dave Smith scored two touchdowns, and Mika Lockard scored another Touchdown while Tim Pumphrey kicked a field goal and three extra points for the Juggernauts. The 1976 Juggernauts must be counted among the best football teams ever to play in northern Kentucky.  The team, coached by Jim Dougherty, rolled through a tough AAA schedule defeating Newport Catholic and Ft. Thomas Highlands on the way to a perfect record of 11 wins without a loss.  The Juggernauts had an even easier time in the playoffs, romping to their easy victories by a combined score of 96-12.  We sure wish we had the names of these boys.

I knew some of these players and coaches from various Erlanger Lions teams in the way back, when Tichenor Middle School was simply known as Erlanger Elementary.  Mid '60s to late '70s was the fir

  • This is something that gets lost in translation of games prior to the mid-90s or so. There was just a whole lot less throwing and a whole lot more "3 yards and a cloud of dust." Games that ended 14-0

You know if Molitor played defense also? I want to say he started DB. Went on to play at Morehead St. Could be another one of the legends that started QB, defense and won a state title while doing so.

I'm not sure about whether or not he'd played D.

That'd make sense that he went to Morehead, though, with former Juggs head coach Roy Lucas coaching at Morehead.

Lloyd beat Belfry in the state finals in '76...Belfry had star WR Jim Matney on their roster.

Yeah interesting time period. Pretty sure Molitor actually went to Morehead as a DB. Not sure exactly what all years they overlapped with each other but Phil Simms NY Giants Superbowl winning QB and MVP was at Morelead St. then also. They were there at the same time with LB David French out of Western High School who originally started out playing at the University of Tennessee. French ended up coaching freshmam football at Lloyd for a long time with Dave Smith as his assistant head coach and OC. French went on to coach at Walton Verona during some of the programs earlier years after he was "let go" by Lloyd for some reasons unknown to man kind. I think Smith then went and coached a few years on Beechwoods freshman staff. Smith and French had a lot of good teams while coaching freshmam ball at Lloyd.

Then you tie in Roy Lucas and Roy Lucas Jr to Lloyd along with all the above and it turns out to be a pretty small world.

Lloyd actually replaced French with Pilgrim as head freshman coach who is now the AD at Lloyd. There's a Wilmhoff teaching at Lloyd now too. I would imagine he is Dick Wilmoff's great grandson. Dick was a legend in his own right, played on the first state title team and coached on the second.

I don't think Molitor played defense nor did he play football at Morehead. He played baseball at Morehead, pitcher.

Roy Lucas was not the coach at Morehead then. He was head coach at a college, West Virginia Tech. I believe he recruited 3 guys off the Lloyd team to W. VA Tech - noseguard Mark Evans, tackle Brad Smith and someone else. Evans started and made all conference as a freshman at Tech, then transferred to Miami OH.

Lockhart spent some time coaching for the Erlanger Lions and had a son that played on Lloyds 2003 semi's team.

I would say your right. Crazy how it all intertwines together in some shape or form though.

Other players who got college scholarships off that team:

Bobby Mullins, baseball at a school in TN. Mullins only played one year of football at Lloyd - started at safety on that 1976 team and was named to a couple all star teams. Mullins coached baseball for many years including Beechwood head coach.

Tackle Tim Wheeler went to Murray State. Wheeler was a starting OT on Ludlow's state title team in 1975. Moved to Erlanger and won a title there in 1976.

I think there were two or three others that played in college. That team was loaded with talent.

Mullins had a good run at Beechwood. Always remembered him associated with baseball didn't realize he started on that 76' team. Great athlete. He lived on Lloyd Avenue forever now I'm pretty sure he is retired in Florida.

I knew Molitor didn't play QB at Morehead so I assumed he played defense on the football team but you are totally correct he didn't play football at all at Morehead it was baseball. Thanks for clearing my mind up, it gets pretty foggy in there sometimes.
