Look at that coaching staff. Some great coaches there, including Cooper high school's namesake Randy Cooper.

  • This is something that gets lost in translation of games prior to the mid-90s or so. There was just a whole lot less throwing and a whole lot more "3 yards and a cloud of dust." Games that ended 14-0

Mullins had a good run at Beechwood. Always remembered him associated with baseball didn't realize he started on that 76' team. Great athlete. He lived on Lloyd Avenue forever now I'm pretty sure he is retired in Florida.

I knew Molitor didn't play QB at Morehead so I assumed he played defense on the football team but you are totally correct he didn't play football at all at Morehead it was baseball. Thanks for clearing my mind up, it gets pretty foggy in there sometimes.

Mullins family owned and operated Jimmy's Roller Dome in Erlanger.

Pretty positive they still do. Every so often I will drive past it and the same guy is manning the front door that has been doing it for 30+ years.

I knew some of these players and coaches from various Erlanger Lions teams in the way back, when Tichenor Middle School was simply known as Erlanger Elementary.

Mid '60s to late '70s was the first "Golden Age" of high school sports in Erlanger-Elsmere in my opinion. Superintendent John Miles, who was an assistant football coach at Dixie for a bit, really supported all sports. Two championship football teams, really good basketball, baseball, and track teams in this era too, plus three state titles in cross country.

Could you explain a little bit about how Cooper ended up being named after Randy Cooper? I know he was the first principal at Ryle and passed away unexpectedly, did they name Cooper after him in honor of his service to the Boone County School District?

Always thought it was wierd Mullins was never the head coach for Lloyd's baseball team and it took a whole lot longer than it should have to get Meyerhoff to be the head man. Mullins would be seen walking all over Erlanger and out cutting his grass proud as could be in that red and white Beechwood gear. You would see him all the time before and after games in gas stations and in Dixie Chili wearing his Beechwood coaching uniform and everyone respected him so much they didn't give him any bologna over it.

Mark and his brother Steve still ride their mountain bikes all over. I see them on their bikes at separate times, never together throughout Crescent Springs, Ft. Mitchell and Erlanger. Steve has lived down the street from Tichenor for ages and was the first coach for Tichenor's middle school football team and Mark has continued to live in Erlanger as well. I have in the past several years seen Mark cutting grass at multiple different residences randomly around Erlanger.

Yes, your comments sum it up as to why they named the school after him. High energy, infectious personality. Fun, strong, discipline at the same time. Ryle's only principal till he passed away in 2006. His wife was Lloyd Superintendent John Miles (mentioned above) daughter.

Fun fact for our Raceand friends on the site, Cooper was a Raceland native and he loved his hometown. My dad is from that area and he and Randy had a kinship because of that - they enjoyed sharing stories from down home.

It's pretty cool to see ties to the area trace all over the state.

You can now catch Lockhard at the Dixie games he has a soph grandson that plays football for the Colonels.

I imagine Miles Elementary is named after John Miles?

Lockhard also had a granddaughter that attended Dixie and was a very good basketball player, in the 1k point club.

Randy Tomlinson on that 76' roster has to be related to John Tomlinson the D line coach at Lloyd right now and his son Lincoln who started linebacker last year for Lloyd as a freshman and led them in tackles for majority of the year. John was a stud, he has another son that graduated from Lloyd some years back that was a freight train.

Not sure about the relationship to John, et al. Randy coached at Beechwood for most of the Rash years.

Also, Lockard has been to a lot of Beechwood games in recent years as two granddaughters have been cheerleaders at Beechwood.

Yeah Lockard has quite a few grandchildren to keep him busy now days.

Sounds like Rash knew what he was doing locking in that good pedigree with Randy Tomlinson.

The Botts' were always good athletes that were all blessed differently with either size, speed or power. Over the years there were quite a few of them that attended Lloyd, along with the Luke's and Ewell's in some different years.

I believe Bill Botts played small college football. His younger brother Mike was an even better athlete, got a scholarship and played at Louisville. Their sister Jackie Botts was an excellent basketball player for Lloyd in the early 80's.
