This is something that gets lost in translation of games prior to the mid-90s or so. There was just a whole lot less throwing and a whole lot more "3 yards and a cloud of dust." Games that ended 14-0 or 21-7 would seem like nail biters today but were much wider than that same score would indicate in today's games.

I wonder if they tracked time of possession back then. Now those numbers probably tell a different story.
