February 2, 200719 yr Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that the profit margin for Exxon was less than 10%... This is within lines of other corporations profit margins. The issue is that Exxon is a monster industrial infrastructure with tons of investments from drilling to shipping to refining and retail that is far larger than most corporations investments on infrastructure. Bottom line is that the $$$ amount is very high and shocks people who are sensative to the price of gas, but the % of profits are about average with everyone else... Agreed, I'd like to see a comparison of others their size(or relative to) over the past 20 years in maybe 5 year increments. Read the other day where the amount of oil imported has tripled in the U.S over the past twenty years, triple the demand and I'd say profits are going to rise as well.

February 2, 200719 yr I started riding the bus to and from work, and moved closer to the busline. Now I walk and bus just about everywhere, partly by choice & partly out of necessity. In a nutshell, I buy a monthly pass for $28/month, cut my fuel spending from $240/mo to $80/month, and have lost about 25-30 lbs. All-in-all, for me, I feel I'm doing my part to counter the "demand". Good for you. That's wonderful. :thumb:

February 2, 200719 yr Author It is folly to compare profit margins (or totals) between companies that are in different industries. For example, software companies will always have ludicrous margins compared to other industries due to the fact that their product is (effectively) intellectual property. Frances

Classic.
