Can’t deny your comment about the results. The results are what they are. But it doesn’t change the fact that, again this year, they have the players to compete for the regional title.

Also I will say that, having  watched many of their games over this period, it has not been due to lack of talent or intangibles on the players’ part.  They’ve had the pieces to win it each of the last 2 years and, given the talent level in the region this year, that’s true yet again.

If it isn't talent or intangibles, that pretty much just leaves chemistry and coaching.  I have to question whether they have athletes or basketball players.  They have have a very poor shooting team each of the past 3 seasons.  Their shooting percentages: 2022-23, 39% overall, 28.9% from 3, 61.3% on free throws.

2023-24, 40.1% overall, 29.8% from 3, 62.6% on free throws.

2024-25, 45.6% overall, 28% from 3, 61.9% on free throws.

This year's team has a good overall percentage, but the rest of those numbers look like the numbers from a .500, or worse, team.

Clearly their percentages have not been great. As far as chemistry, there were a lot of issues over the past couple of years. Even more so last year. You could see that from the stands.

Shot selection, who took the shots and the player rotations in general. Those had a lot to do with the poor percentages IMO. They’ve had good enough players the past couple years to have had better percentages than that.

And yes, many played football but were more than just good athletes that happened to play basketball. I know that four of their best players last year had played basketball their whole lives, and at least three of those a lot in the offseason.

I've been hearing about the Boyle County athletes for a long time now and I'm not sure I buy it this year.  Driver and Brown are definitely excellent athletes.  Other than those two I just don't see it.  The rest of the players aren't better athletically than a lot of the other players in the region.  If you put Quisenberry, Turner, Hager, and Brock Driver on that team then I'd say you have the athletes.

I understand why you say that. And I’ll agree that they don’t have the number of higher level athletes they’ve had the last couple years. But I still think they’re more athletic than most teams in the region.

Brown, Driver & Richards are very athletic. Smith and Best are pretty athletic as well. And all 5 are in the top 7 of their rotation.

DCA and Lincoln will come out of the 45th this year. Boyle is a team I look at as what if...what if Quisenberry, Hager, Turner all played this year. They would've had everything you wanted. Size, Shooting, Depth, Great Guards all you need to win a region Championship in a weak 12th Region this year. Danville don't have enough size to compete with DCA or Lincoln and they lack guard play other than Paige.

I think tonight's match-up of Boyle at Wayne is an interesting one. At times this year, Wayne has looked like they could play with just about anyone but they haven't really been able to do it for an entire game. They led Taylor at Taylor until down in the 4th quarter but couldn't pull it out. Wayne led Pulaski almost the entire game and lost in overtime at home. They've also lost a few games they should have won.

It sounds like Boyle may be sort of in the same boat in that they are trying to find some consistency and figure out who they are. I hope both teams are "on" and we have a good one with no injuries.

Do you know if there will be streaming of this game?  I've not had a chance to see much of
Wayne this year.

I have it saved on my TV at home, but I'm pretty sure it's here Wayne.  If not, go to the Wayne County Schools district page and click WC live.

12th Region All A Tournament Preview @ Danville HS

  • Dates- Mon. Jan. 6th through Friday Jan. 10th (Weather could impact)
  • The Bracket
  1. Mon. Jan. 6th (7:30) Somerset vs. Danville Christian
  2. Tues. Jan. 7th (7:30) Burgin vs. Trinity Christian
  3. Wed. Jan. 8th (7:30) Somerset/DCA Winner vs. Danville
  4. TH. Jan. 9th (7:30) Burgin/TCA Winner vs. Somerset Christian
  5. Championship Night Fri. Jan. 10th (7:30)
  • The Teams (I preface this by stating I know a little more about certain teams than others)
  • Danville Christian (8-2 BGP #1 12th Region)  The Warriors come into the tournament as the overwhelming favorite.  Not only do they look like the best "small school" team, but also the best team in the entire region.  They smother you with overwhelming size on the defensive end, and play a very active zone.  Their collective size eliminates most shots at the rim, so you better be on from deep to beat this team!  The Warriors have tested themselves early with big time games such as Woodford Co. and Ashland, and are lead by a veteran trio (6"10 F Leek Ateny 17 PPG/9 RPG, 6"1 PG Titus Boyd 14 PPG/4 RPG and 6"10 C. Lual Ayiei 12 PPG/6 RPG) that have played in many big games throughout their career.  This year's version of the Warriors are different than the past because they're a deeper team (playing 9 guys) and do not have much fall off if any from the bench.  The Warriors will be locked in to playing Somerset the opening game of the tournament, and pursing a run to a repeat title.
  • Somerset (6-4 BGP #7)  Somerset has started the season off hot & cold.  Which, was to be expected with the big firepower  being replaced on the offensive end of the floor from last season.  Somerset will need to find consistent production from unproven commodities to become a threat for this crown and the big one!  Somerset has also played a solid schedule with upper echelon teams in the region, and solid 13th Region contenders in Corbin and Bell Co.  The Briar Jumpers are led by (JR. SG. Aedyn Absher 17 PPG/3 RPG and SR. PG Josh Bruner 8 PPG/4 RPG/60% 3 PT Line).  The Briar Jumpers will have to bring their A game to have a chance to advance in round one over the Warriors.
  • Danville (4-6 BGP #13)  Danville has been plaqued by the injury bug to start the season.  However, they did luck out in the draw being afforded the bye on one side of the bracket.  Their best player Tre Paige returned to action last night against DCA.  The Admirals have some pieces, and could be a dangerous team moving forward.  They had flashes against DCA last night that showed they can be a formidable player.  They're led by (SR. SG. Tre Paige 21 PPG in limited action & SO. F. Jaciyon  Graves 11 PPG/10 RPG).  The Admirals will be waiting in the semifinals to protect their home court against either rival Somerset or DCA.
  • Somerset Christian (7-5 BGP #14)  Somerset Christian is an upstart program that has had some bright spots already this season.  They've won games they should've, and has had some near misses.  They're the big winners of the draw, as they have the bye on one side of the bracket awaiting the winner of Burgin & TCA.  The Cougars are led by (JR. SG. Jack Baker 16 PPG/50% 3 PT, JR. SG. Isaiah Hensley 15 PPG/4 RPG and SR. F. #10 Braley Adderley 13 PPG/7 RPG).  The Cougars should be waiting in the Finals barring a major upset.
  • Trinity Christian (6-4 BGP #15)  I must admit I am not keenly aware of the TCA team.  However, they made a regional tournament last season and return some key cogs from that team.  (SR. G. Bryce Thompson 23 PPG/31% 3 PT Line and Allen Okorley 6 PPG/7 RPG).  They should fare well against Burgin in game 1, and move to the semifinals with a big time clash of "Christian" establishments.
  • Burgin (2-8 BGP #17)  The Bulldogs have struggled this year, and will have an uphill challenge in game 1 vs. TCA.  The Bulldogs are led in scoring by Micah Mayes at 12 PPG.  The Bulldogs always play hard, and will be looking to spring an upset.
  • Outlook

This tournament has been high level the past few years, since DCA hit the scene in 2021.  Including, a finals last year between Somerset & DCA that would be a prelude to a Regional Semifinals thriller a few months later.  DCA has won the tournament twice and Danville has won it once with Somerset being in the mix as well.  DCA is the favorite, and I would be surprised if they don't represent the 12th in the All A state classic.  But, they do have the toughest draw to go through with Somerset in Round One and the host school Danville in Round Two.  On the other side of the bracket, I feel like Somerset Christian has the path with the bye and will be in the finals.  This tournament is always one of my favorite events on the calendar, so hopefully the incoming weather won't impact it too much!

Hope everyone enjoys my "All A" post.  I look forward to it every season, and like to give the little guys (albeit the #1 team in the tourney ?) their flowers.

Any live streams for Somerset and Rockcastle tonight? Boyle and Wayne? Any other 12th region matchups I’m missing?

I can't get either of these to work.  Is anyone else able to get it?

My video feed from Wayne County is real glitchy but it's 32-25 Wayne at halftime.

Rockcastle and Somerset tied, 28-28 at halftime.
