Pre-season NKY Girls Top 10

Recommended Posts

With Thanksgiving nearly upon us, and the season beginning next week, I wanted to throw out my Pre-Season NKY Top 10 heading into the season.  I tend to think there are 3 "much the best" squads this year, all from the 9th, with an 8th and a 10th team that look like they could join them on that top tier.  You then have 3 other 9th teams that look like they will be good, not great, and should test the "Big 5" on a lot of nights, but typically fall just short.  Then you have some clubs with new coaches, or experienced coaches and new rosters, that look to keep themselves in the Top 10 all year.  As usual, it should be a GREAT season of NKY Girls basketball, with a ton of talent, and I hope people get out to watch them play!!

1.  Cooper (they open on 12/5 at Highlands!!!)  I get what they lost, but I'm giving Coach Holthaus and that team the benefit of the doubt.

2.  Notre Dame (they open on 12/2 vs St. Ursula [OH])  Well coached, a great big, a Swiss army knife (Maya Lawrie), and a lot of depth.

3.  Highlands (they open 12/3 vs Dixie)  Have Bowie and Turpin around the basket (two D1 bigs), losing Macke hurts for sure, but Orme will be big on the ball.

4.  Simon Kenton (they open 12/5 vs Ryle)  Webb, Kelch, and Pernell are a GREAT trio, can they get enough from the rest to win the 8th?  I say yes.  Very well coached.

5.  Campbell County (they open 12/3 at Sacred Heart)  Not enough people are talking about the Camels, Izzy is awesome but they have plenty more than her.

6.  Dixie (they open 12/3 at Highlands)  Again, not enough buzz around them, they are very well coached, Budde is a GREAT LEADER, and get Cora and Asia back.

7.  Ryle (they open 12/3 at Holy Cross)  You know what Jones is (but how will she handle being first option), and you know what McClain could be, but lots of talented young questions around them.

8.  Holy Cross (they open 12/3 vs Ryle)  Losing Hunt, Hayes, and Wimzie is a lot to overcome, but Carter will be good on the ball, Nelson will provide scoring and toughness, and Arlinghaus can really shoot it.

9.  Bishop Brossart (they open 12/2 at Badin [OH])  Tough-minded, have a really good senior in Meyers, and some really good young players around her.

10.  NewCath (they open 12/2 at Augusta)  Caroline is AWESOME, new coach, Brannen girls are solid and play hard, but everything else is a question.

=====================================================================================================

*  St. Henry (they open 12/2 at Grant County)  I LOVE Danny Trame, but their best players are younger and will be asked to do a lot more, and I'm interested to see how Beechwood transfer Gia Jones fits into their backcourt.

*  Grant County (they open 12/2 vs St. Henry)  Great trio of players and very good coach, wouldn't surprise me if they become a fixture in the Top 10 this year.

*  Walton Verona (they open 12/3 vs Conner)  Love Terrell, Logue can score in bunches, and excited to see Coach Gayheart coach up the rest of her rotation.

*  Conner (they open 12/3 at WV) This will be a fun year for Coach Gambrel as she reboots with uber-athlete Kerns, dependable Craddock, and a very young group around them.

*  Bellevue (they open 12/3 vs Williamstown)  Terrific coach, 7 seniors, and return nearly everyone from last year.  Will be fun to keep an eye on this year.

2 hours ago, I gotta go to work said:

Watch out for the Scott Lady Eagles.

Big fan of Coach Pouncy, but I'm not sure.  To make matters worse, their first 11 games are BRUTAL...they could easily be 2-9 after their first 11.  They certainly aren't ducking anyone.

It should be an interesting season for several of the teams.  I have noticed that several rosters have more 8th and 9th graders with limited Sophomores and Juniors if any.  Is there a lack of interest from the sophomores and juniors this season?  There are Freshman teams with more 7th and 8th graders than Freshmen.  Again is it a lack of interest or is it within the coaching?

Three good games involving NKY teams this evening, so if someone beats me to them, please give each game its own thread.

Brossart heads up to Hamilton (OH) to play Badin....very good test for the Lady Stangs.

Notre Dame hosts St. Ursula (OH) out of the GGCL.  Ursula is usually solid, not great, but I have no idea how good or not they are this year.  St. Ursula also plays Holy Cross later this year.

St. Henry and their new Coach, Danny Trame, head south to take on a very good Grant County team in Dry Ridge.  I'm excited to see what the Cru looks like, minus Unkraut, and under Coach Trame.
