Beechwood coaches, WHY HAS THE PLAY CALLING CHANGED FROM LAST YEAR?! You have one of the best QBs in the state and one of the best WR rooms with the most speed in the state and we just let Chase get beat up between the tackles all year. I even think Chase is at his best when we throw swing passes to him to get him into open field. Clay should have 300 passing yards every single game. This team is so talented and if they don’t win state, it’ll be because we aren't playing to our strengths..

Load the box on D, throw the ball on offense.. seems easy enough.

Because you have to have a running game to win a state title. Do you want to win a state title? You better have a running game. In 2022 title year, Beechwood rushed for 2884 yards as a team. In 2021 title year they rushed for 3,310 yards. Last year, Beechwood  rushed for 1,646 yards. HUGE difference.

Chase Flaherty has already rushed for more yards this year in 10 games than he did all last year in 14 games. That is a positive for Beechwood's chances at winning a title.

I do agree with one point. I would like to see more swing passes and more short passes. Those swing passes to Chase are basically running plays and make a defense guard the width of the field. That opens more space for the passing game too. It seems like this year the passing game is all about going deep. Hayden is at his best when he is reading defenses pre snap and going quick to the receiver who is open based on what the defense is giving him. More short passes, more swing passes. Get the ball to the speed in open space and let them add on yards after catch. Last year Hayden completed 73% of his passes. This year he is at 67%.

Hand up here, I was wrong. No running clock this game. Good for Beechwood to get to keep their guys in for more than a half and great for Bracken to be the only team in the district to score a TD on BW.

True but the game was one play from being a running clock.

When is the last time that Beechwood didn’t put a running clock on a district opponent?

On October 23, 2009, Beechwood beat Bellevue 20-8

In the 15 years of district play since then, only one district team avoided a running clock against Beechwood.

That happened October 14, 2022 .... Final score Beechwood 34 Lloyd 7

Last night was just the second time in the last 15 years a district opponent avoided a running clock against Beechwood.

The last time Beechwood lost a district game was in 2005 at Bellevue, final score Bellevue 27 Beechwood 21.

Easy pickings running against that front.

No such things as moral victories in football.

This is an absolutely wild stat!

It's going to happen. And it might be at the Igloo.

Second round is based off of district seeding. So if a game happens at the Igloo, it would be because Owen had upset Somerset. If Somerset wins, the Bracken winner goes to Somerset. In the 3rd round it goes to RPI rankings. Unless they have changed it again and I didn't see it.

I wish I could quote everybody’s reply at once.. everyone knows you need some type of running game to win football games and state but with this play calling, I feel like I’m watching the Bengals, knowing how well we can throw the ball and we just don’t. I think we are running way too much especially for how good our QB and WR are. Its been all year I’ve thought this and not just the last 5 for sure W games and I’m not the only one who thinks this. I hear many parents saying it at games. So no I don’t think its about hiding plays on film.

I don’t have the actual stats but round numbers just guessing, I would say last year it was 70/30 past to run, now I’d say it’s 70/30 run to Pass. I would just like to see it 60/40 pass to run with more deep balls thrown. We should be the fastest scoring offense in the state. You don’t need a run game when you can score in 3 to 4 plays through the air which is confidence that I have in the tigers

First, if you think Beechwood is going to consistently score in 3-4 pass plays against the tougher teams, everything else I say below probably doesn't matter.

Second, Beechwood is running more this year. I think it is both on purpose and because they can run the ball better this year than last year.

Let's see what the play call break down is this year. The best way to see what plays are called with the starting team on the field is passes and runs by Hayden versus runs by starting players in each game. Runs by Hayden are really pass plays where he had to scramble. So if we want to see what plays are being called for the starters, any runs by Hayden count as passes.

Types of plays called per game for Beechwood starting team:

Pulaski County ........ 25 passes, 18 runs

Campbell County .... 33 passes, 30 runs

Dixie Heights ........... 28 passes, 32 runs

Simon Kenton .......... 30 passes, 25 runs

Covington Catholic .. 25 passes, 17 runs

Bracken County ....... 22 passes, 22 runs

Do the rest of the games even matter? They were all so lopsided they tell us nothing about how Beechwood will call plays in a challenging game.

Totals in competitive games .... 163 pass plays, 144 pass plays = 53% pass plays, 47% run plays

Yes, running the ball more this year. Why?

1. Because they are better at running the ball this year than they were last year. Last year Flaherty averaged 5.5 yards per carry. This year, 6.7 yards per carry. Flaherty only had 676  yards rushing in 14 games last year. This year he has 1,012 in 10 games.

2. What is the biggest concern in winning a title for Beechwood? The defense. How do you help the defense? Run the ball.

3. Honestly, they aren't as sharp passing the ball this year as they were last year. Injuries certainly are a big part of that. Let's see how they look and what the play calling is when they get Fryman back in the next couple weeks.

This is the main reason Beechwood is running the ball so much. Their defense is a liability and they don’t trust theirselves in a pure shoot out type game because another teams D is more likely to stop our offense than the other way around. Their defensive tackling is atrocious and the defensive play calling is beyond atrocious.

Yeah ... I agree ... why bring facts to the discussion when you can just throw out numbers!?

I put up a picture from last week which shows the defense Beechwood has been getting. (It has happened a lot more than just last week). I noticed that you never addressed that?

Should Beechwood force the ball into defenses that they are outnumbered in? Or should they run the football when common sense dictates?

What is the real issue here? Beechwood making decisions that any coach in America would make --which is based purely on facts and winning games to help the PROGRAM accomplish their goals or should they force the ball into situations where it makes ZERO sense to do so?

Serious question ... what is harder to stop ... a one dimensional team that only passes or runs ... or a team that can do both?

In fairness ....Beechwood has won championships in 6 of the last 8 years and has lost 3 out of their last 24 games. Oh the travesty ... how dare they make decisions that has produced consistent championships and wins for the program!

For sure, but that is two different coaches.  I think how this season ends is very important for the Beechwood football program.

How every year finishes is important at schools like Beechwood. With that said ...the Offensive staff is basically the exact same. A lot more apples to apples than is being presented.

Did you feel the same way after Coach Rash's first season? 9-3 and a loss in the 2nd round of the playoffs ... I know Coach Rash felt that pressure. I am pretty sure Coach Volker feels the same.

I think the defense has improved which is pretty interesting considering the fact that T. Fryman hasn't been back yet. Time will absolutely tell.

I do find the defense talk to be interesting considering the fact that out of the top 6 teams in RPI ...only one has given up fewer points. (O Cath).

The program is in excellent hands with Coach Volker. the middle school and freshmen teams have a ton of players who can play. the foundation of the program is just as good as it has been. You nearly have the same staff in place as Coach Rash did .... so its hard for me took around and be chicken little. Anyone who pretends that it is ... is being disingenuous.
