5A South Warren (3-0) at IN Class 3A Gibson Southern, Indiana (3-0)

Good game here with 2 teams that started playing in the 2021 Season when South Warren won the 5A State Championship.  The 3 games they have played turned out like this:

2021 – at South Warren 42-7; Spartans win.

2022 – at Gibson Southern 28-24; Titans win.

2023 – at South Warren 45-28; Spartans win.

Last season, South held serve against the Titans outlasting a good Gibson Southern effort 45-28.  QB Bryce Button had a good game, but not a great one by his high standards throwing for just under 200 yards with 3 TDs and 1 INT.

Gibson Southern Information

The Titans have defeated Danville, IN (21-14), Mt. Carmel, IN (42-6) and Princeton, IN (62-7).  The Titans are led by JR QB Zach Foster who has 4 TD passes on the year going into the Princeton game.  SR WR Maddux Potts has 3 TDs on the year going into the Princeton game.  Defensively, JR LB Colin Scherer leads the team with 11.5 tackles per game going into the Princeton game and SO DL Khale Campbell has 2 sacks on the year going into the Princeton game.  Gibson Southern is always well coached with Nick Hart in command; this being his thirteenth year at the helm for the Titans.  Coaching stability for a high school football program is greatly underrated IMO.

South Warren Information

South Warren comes into the game with a 3-0 record; most recently South scored 4 touchdowns in the last 6 minutes of the second quarter and would go to halftime with a 29-0 lead.  Storms caused a longer halftime.  South got a safety and another passing TD in the second half to win very comfortably 38-6 vs a floundering Southwestern team.  South outgained Southwestern 317 to 170.  Long bus ride for the Warriors.  Speaking of long bus rides...

Game Preview

South will make the 2-hour trip to Fort Branch (above Henderson) to battle the Titans.  These teams are both playing pretty well right now.  I look for the Titans to try to move the chains in the air.  I think they know by now that South has a strong run defense and perhaps passing sets up the run game strategy might be best for them.

For South Warren, just keep the ball in Button’s hands and let him continue to make plays for you.  He’s done that every game this year and I look for that to continue this week.

South Warren 28

Gibson Southern 14

Intriguing game. I’m going to go with South Warren in a close one, but I would not be at all surprised if Gibson Southern won this one. @Titan32 why is Gibson Southern ranked so low in the Indiana standings? I’m going off of MaxPreps. I've been looking at their recent years and you guys have been incredibly consistent and by all means a very solid program. I hope South Warren pulls it off because it’s against an out-of-state opponent, but much respect to your program.

Credit to both teams for scheduling this series.

Maxpreps only knows data and shows that 90% of last year's offensive production was lost to graduation.  Mostly QB Tanner Boyd and RB/SB Sean DeLong.

In both the IFCA (Coaches Poll) and the AP (USA Today Press Poll), GS is ranked 2nd in 3A in Indiana.

Can you guys tell me how South Warren is ranked in KY Coaches or Press Polls?  I can't make heads or tails of the ranking threads in this forum...they seem to only list matchups for the week.

I don’t know if I can be of much help since I typically reference the MaxPreps rankings, but according to the Kentucky High School Football Media Poll they’re ranked 4th in the 5A division. On MaxPreps they’re ranked 9th in the entire state.

I think you are correct in you comment about coaching stability when you were assessing Gibson Southern.  I think it should be noted that this is Brandon Smith's 11 season at the helm of South Warren.

South Warren will not win 5A, that much is quite clear.

Titans 24 Spartans 21

27-24 South Warren in the 4th.
