Pretty good game for first game of the season.   Looked like Courtney (CCH) might have been injured for a few plays.  Highlands defense was led by DE Sturdevant and LB Davis.

I will add the following.  The offensive play calling was pretty good.  The most impressive thing was not what you see on the stat sheet.  The kids were flying around and playing with a lot of heart and determination throughout the game.  That type of desire to succeed can be infectious and it was last night.

I thought their team gang tackling was outstanding. They were flying to the ball carrier last night. Other than a few long runs and a couple of nice passing plays from the Colonels, the Baby Birds pretty much kept them in check after the Colonels scored first.

I heard some 2nd hand grumbling from some Bird fan friends about the play calling in the possession just before halftime. At that point, Covington Catholic only had one timeout left, but instead of running the ball with under 2 minutes until halftime, the calls were made for 3 straight passes, which all fell incomplete while taking very little time off the clock. The ball went back to Covington Catholic with plenty of time to get a score before half.  Not sure, but I think only a missed field goal kept the Colonels from scoring to end the half.

In my opinion, one of the biggest plays of the game took place right before the half.    Riesenbeck was back to punt and a rusher came through untouched.    He was able to roll out and get the kick off Australian style.   If he does not get that kick off, CovCath has the ball around the 5.   They score there and its either tied or a 1 point game, momentum changes plus CovCath gets the ball to start 2nd half.    Big time play there.

Called RB Screen on 1st down was definitely the right call with CCH playing downhill and Highlands backs were up against the wall. Complete that PASS and its halftime with no Chance for CCH. I like the call. HHS will complete that 9 out of 10 times anyday of the week. Just so happens that 1 time they didn’t. Maybe 2nd & 3rd could of been different but that's why Coach Mick Abner is calling the Plays and not me. Other than that 1 series, Mick pretty much called a perfect game. The score reflects that.

Whoever 63 is for us at RT is getting a bunch snaps for on the OL next year. Really good physical player.

I sense the Birds are “stacking” impressive freshman football classes back to back.

I was told that this CovCath team played the Highlands kids twice as 7th graders and smoked them twice.  Speaks well for the Birds kids putting in the work.
