January 26, 200719 yr I've been saying this for years... Why can we not bring in Pelphry or Ford and let them recruit? And to motivate them, tell them if they do a good job they will be the front runner to be head coach when Tubby moves on (whenever that will be).

Why would anyone leave a head coaching job to go to another school just to recruit? That would be a terrible career move.

January 26, 200719 yr I try to stay even keel after a loss or a win and I do realize things arent as bad as they seem right now, and arent as good as they seemed after we blewout South Carolina. But the fact is we have got to start consistently getting better players at UK. I think in 3 of the last 4 years recruiting goals have fell short. Dont get me wrong, I love the freshmen class and I think they are going to be great, but we needed a good PF in that class to really be a starter as a freshman and we didnt get one. Now we need Patrick Patterson and I believe we would be a much better team with a true pointguard like Lucas coming in and helping. I think the only way to straighten things out is for Tubby to get rid of Rigot and Reggie Hanson and get some assistants who can recuit better. LMB I agree with you on all of these points, good post/thread. I really like this years class as well and think that the recruiting has improved. We do need however more than just this years freshman class. The freshman this season imo are going to be special at U.K.. U.K. needs to duplicate in getting good classes year after year. I know that we need Patterson or one of his type/PF abilities.. I have heard more than once around our area about him having a lets say "not so good" attitude and discipline problems but this may not be true. If so, we sure don't need that. I also agree with dumping Rigot and Hansen. Those two just have not been getting the job done on the recruiting side of things in the last few years.
January 26, 200719 yr Why would anyone leave a head coaching job to go to another school just to recruit? That would be a terrible career move. Kentucky isnt just another school. It is their alma mater and the winningest program ever. Its not a bad career move in my mind if they are promised rewards for their patience in the future.

But if your the head coach at any school and are succesfull where you are you don't leave and take a job that would be in the opposite direction your trying to take your career. I don't care what school it is, it would be foolish to do. As far as promising them a possible head coaching job in the future, that's not something UK will ever do either. If your the head coach at UK, there are no promises you will be there from one year to the next. So they're surely not going to promise an assistant coach (or anyone for that matter) a future head coaching job.

Ford is better than an assistants job anywhere.
January 27, 200719 yr If being an assistant at UK isn't a good job, why does David Hobbs still coach here as an assistant when he has been a head coach? Are you telling me he can't get a head coaching job somewhere else? There is no question that being an assistant at UK is as good or better than being a head coach at South Alabama.
January 27, 200719 yr I also think that chasing ***** players is what has hurt Rick...sometimes he would rather get 3 of the top 5 players than get what he needs....for example, he has Terrence at SF as a soph, Earl Clark as a SF as a Frosh, and was trying to get that other kid as a SF...come on Rick, use that bean....love him or hate him, Krzyzewski goes after his needs in two year increments...he knew when Daniel Ewing was leaving that he would need a PG, and an eventual big man...enter McRoberts and Paulus....then JJ and big Shel were leaving, enter Scheyer and Zoubek....Henderson and Thomas were icing....plus he gets kids that fit the Duke mold, the only one that I can think of that was not that way was Corey Maggette (never liked him, but was a freak)....Duke kids don't get in, or cause problems while there....Rick and Tubby have some serious work to do...but it might be as easy as getting lower rated players that fill specific needs, and that want to play for the name on the front of the jersey, instead of the one on the back.

Are you telling me he can't get a head coaching job somewhere else? Hobbs remains an assistant at UK because he's not cut out to be a head coach. He spent most of his career as an assistant and inherited a head coaching job at Bama. After winning only 60% of his games there, he resigned. He is a defensive genius, but a head coach he is not. Pelphrey and Travis are also young coaches, trying to better their career. Hobbs is in his 50's. There is no question that being an assistant at UK is as good or better than being a head coach at South Alabama. That's debatable.

Why has Coach K dug hiself a bit of a hole this year by only having 1 pointguard? Nothing wrong with having multiple really good players at the same position. See UNC.
January 27, 200719 yr I'll give you a long term solution. How about UK actually recruit a power forward and get him on campus. This team has been without a power forward since Chuck Hayes.
