January 25, 200719 yr I didn't interpret McCain's comments as abandoning ship. Sure he was critical of Cheney, but McCain is solidly behind Bush's surge policy and thus he's still on board as I look at it. I do get a chuckle out of this whole RINO thing however. If a Republican stays to the far right, he is casted as someone who is so idealogical that he can't work with the Democrats and compromise to move America forward. If a Republican works with the Democrats and is not so extreme, then he is a RINO. People say the problem with the Democratic Party on the national level is that they are controlled by the far left liberal agenda; that the Democrats need a more moderate candidate. When the poor son of a gone decides to run on a more moderate Democratic platform, people will be criticizing him as a DINO I guess. I don't really understand some people. Bush has a deficit because of the extreme costs of Iraq, Afghanistan and homeland defense. Rather than starting a war with the Democrats by cutting social programs or starting a war with the Republicans by raising taxes to keep the deficit as small as possible, Bush makes the call that he's going to do neither and trust that with economic growth, the deficit can be managed (and there are economists that agree with him on that point and it has happened in the past). And he gets casted as someone who abandoned the Republican principles of small govt., i.e. a RINO. He gets criticized for invading Iraq to protect America's oil interests. Yet other people go ape crazy when oil prices go high and blame him for that also. Which is it? It can't be both. Rather than give the man (and other similar politicians) credit for trying to be a moderate and not be an extremist (which is something we all say we want from our elected officials, but for some reason can't recognize it when it happens), people attack him. Why? Because some people just don't like him and look for reasons to attack him, both from the far left and from the far right. They want to criticize him to make him and his party look bad for their own and their party's best interests. The reasons why more politicians are not moderates and willing to compromise and work with the other side, is easy to understand. When you do so, you are attacked from hacks on both sides of the aisle. Its politically safer to be an extremist because you only get attacked from one side, which while safer is not what I want from my elected officials. I want people who are not afraid to make the tough choices regardless of the political attacks. I want elected officials not to be hung up on his party's extreme idealogical positions. And I fully realize that some people did the same thing to Clinton while he was in office and that was wrong also. :thumb:
January 25, 200719 yr A fair question, Habib. Many would ask how long someone with a 26% approval rating takes before they consider the possibility that they are on the wrong path. Frances However, great Presidents don't pay attention to approval ratings. If Lincoln had paid attention to polls, he would not have fought the south and they would have formed their own country. Overwhelming the North did not want to enter the war, yet he knew it would be much better the the United States in the long run and that is what matters.
January 26, 200719 yr Author ...great Presidents don't pay attention to approval ratings.... Great President's listen to advice, ESPECIALLY dissenting opinions. Then, they take the best information they have, and make in INFORMED decision. Great President's don't thumb their noses at anyone that disagrees with them, dismissing them out of hand. Great President's don't invade sovereign nations for no legitimate reason. Frances

Frances Thanks for finally admitting you think Bush is a great president. It took you long enough.
January 28, 200719 yr Thanks for finally admitting you think Bush is a great president. It took you long enough. Somehow, I don't think Frances is a 26% er.
January 28, 200719 yr I wish Frances and Leatherneck would run for office. There has been more cooperation in this thread from two people who disagree than there has been in Washington in the last 20 years. Praise God for the common sense that belongs to two of Kentucky's finest.

January 29, 200719 yr Author Thanks for finally admitting you think Bush is a great president. It took you long enough. LOL. Well done, 75. Frances
January 29, 200719 yr Leatherneck is a fine man, and I think he would be a fine President. When can we vote for him? Frances Are you insane? His SOTU address could last for days! He should be here any moment to kick my fannie.
January 29, 200719 yr Leatherneck is a fine man, and I think he would be a fine President. When can we vote for him? Frances No way.You are going to run for the Pres. I'll be your VP. How's that for a balanced ticket?:ylsuper:
January 29, 200719 yr Are you insane? His SOTU address could last for days! He should be here any moment to kick my fannie. I'm a lover not a fighter:jump:. Besides, I'm angling for the VP spot. You'd just get to see my pretty face in the background as Frances gives his SOTU address (unless he gets too too far out of line with his agenda, then you may see me pull out my top secret, pocket taser and shoot him in the backside). p.s. Thanks for the compliment Basketball peanut. I'm sure Frances felt complimented also.
January 30, 200719 yr Author Cut to the podium with the Presidential Seal - I'm going over the highlights of my plan to cut WAY DOWN on the overcrowding of the prison system's "death row", and Leatherneck leads a rousing standing ovation... I move on to our plan to expedite revamping of the IRS and the tax code - while Leatherneck rises (yet again) to lead the cheers... I then begin to discuss the legislation I am proposing to revisit the issue of gun control, and my head snaps around as the barbs bite into the cheeks of my butt. Just as I reach back to pull them free, LN hits the trigger, and I'm flopping on stage like a fish out of water. While I try to recover, LN steps to the podium and completes the delivery of the speech. Balanced ticket, indeed... Frances PS - as LN said, peanut, I took your post as a compliment. Just being mentioned alongside LN in such a thought is high praise.
