Ashland 68 Rose Hill 47

Featured Replies

Dakatah moved to the ashland area his 3rd grade year. His brother played at Ashland High School. Darrell Arbaugh. He signed with Furman University in 2003./

Since you brought it up...

Stud athlete, sharp mind, great young man (and you don't want to insult his little brother and let him learn your BGP ID...we're talking huge man:eek: )...but his greatest assets are his beautiful wife and precious baby boy...about whom, I suspect...if he learns to handle the rock that his grandfather Euton gave him for Christmas (his first Reebok)...we will be reading on these pages years down the road...if Mommy and Daddy ever get on the stick and GET BACK TO KY!!:D

You have to give me some credit for my prediction on this game.

:thumb: :thumb: That I do wireman, you should now change yopu bgp name to "the swami"??:D

Good win for the Cats. Rose Hill will continue to mature and learn. I would not let this game influence my opinion too much for the post-season. Those young players have a ton of talent and will surprise somebody. I still can't make myself say Wireman is a genious, but it was a good call on his part.

I seemed to predict the game just fine without seeing both teams play.

You did just that wireman but you had better be careful, you are going to throw a shoulder out patting yourself on the back.  By the way, I probably would be doing the same thing.:D :thumb:

The 25-4 disparity in free throws was obviously a key, as was the loss of Chad Jackson for RH. I would add that it did appear that there was the same contact on the ball up top and on shooters on both ends of the floor. One is always disappointed when the calls don't seem to be going your way. No conspiracy theory...just one of those things that have to be said.

The Tomcat's stronger bodies seemed to take their toll on the younger Royals. There appeared to be routine contact and positioning under the basket on both ends of the floor, but the Royals were unable to move bodies like the Tomcats did. Euton and Jackson had some impressive rebounds, but they had little help.

Ashland's kids moved the ball well, didn't force shots and seemed to hit the 3 when it was most needed. I don't think they had a high percentage, but when they came, they were heartbreakers.

It is always fun to watch Drew McDavid...a great kid and wonderful athlete...and who exhibits what can only be described as basketball smarts on the floor. The Jackson/Thomas and Euton/McDavid match-ups...in my view, great contrasts in styles...and are as good as any in the region and ones I hope fans get to see again.

With all due respect to Scooterbob, I was pleased to see the game scheduled and hope that the conduct on the floor by both teams demonstrates to adults on both sides why these kids should be allowed to compete. I suspect that players on both teams look forward to a rematch.

When you say younger players dont you mean held back players.I know of 3 for sure and Im sure there is more.Dont get me wrong they are good players, but their not that much younger. And I would also have to say your JV Coach is very good, he is so good he could take Ashlands JV and beat RH JV by 20. Ashland is weak at that postion but maybe there will be a change there by next year. Nice job by the RH JV and a great job by their coach.

I agree with much in your post but would have liked to have seen it without the typical cut- this time about holding back students. Rose Hill, like most every other school in the area, has kids who have been held back a year. Even your beloved favorite has, in recent years, held back students for athletics. Whether those kids "panned out" may be another story. In fact, I was told by a school leader in another local school, that some Ashlanders approached the school about allowing some elementary boys to repeat an elementary grade at the school. I was told that the families abandoned the idea when they were told that they would have to pay tuition.

I would agree that much of Rose Hill's success against younger Ashland teams has been due to the Rose Hill coaching staff- from third grade up. However, an honest assessment must conclude that Rose Hill, for whatever reason, has had superior players. For example, Rose Hill has repeatedly defeated Ashland's 8th grade team. The games are usually fairly close. However, it is noteworthy that Rose Hill does so with 7th graders since only one 8th grader, Alex Malloy, plays on the team. And, in fact, last week, when RH again beat your 8th grade (on your home court), Malloy didn't even dress for the game. Thus, 6th and 7th graders are beating 8th graders. I'm sure that is a concern to you.

I agree that Rose Hill has superior coaching at several levels including, as you said, the JV. However, you can't win without talent and there is a decided difference in the talent levels of the two schools from the 9th grade down.

Without a goodly number of transfers, Ashland should have problems the next few years. As T-CAT4LIFE, said, they will "just reload". The question will be in regard to whether the gun is reloaded with bullets or bbs.

This post is not meant as a negative toward Ashland but merely one person's analysis, based upon a decent level of personal knowledge of the facts, of the situation as it now stands. None of us know the future and can only use the facts as they now appear.

Are we seriously talking about elementary and middle school games on here? How about we open a thread for Pee-Wee basketball where you can brag about your 6th graders beating everyone. Let's talk about high school b-ball on here, since that is what it was opened for.

Geez-just take the loss. This is not new that RH has young players. It's a small school. To make up a team in the levels that other schools have, you have to pull up kids from the lower grades. It does not mean that you are that much better than everyone else.

As I recall Zonebuster23, not I, raised the issues. I believe he is one of your boys. When he, you, or anyone else takes shots, they should be answered. Try reading the posts that lead up to a post that "offends" you. It never hurts to be informed. Try it sometime. Your overreaction indicates that I hit a nerve. Good. On the other hand, I cannot win arguing with one with a split personality, can I?

You may not want to go there Zonebuster. The three leading scorers for Ashland are what are referred to in AAU circles as "grade exceptions" meaning they could be anywhere from "a little old" for their grade to being a full year behind others. Also at least a couple of key players off the bench fill that description .Let me state here that I see nothing wrong with that.It doesn't matter if it is RH,Ashland,Fairview ,Russell or any other team in the region.I would say that almost every team in the region and for that matter the state has a significant player that is a "grade exception".I just think to somehow attribute the success that RH has had this year is somehow due to "holdbacks" is unfair.

On another note the victory last night for Ashland was most impressive.IMO Coleman isn't getting enough recognition. It is difficult enough to stop McDavid,Thomas and Wilcox. When you add Coleman to the mix Ashland looks very formidable. My only question is: Down deep does Ashland believe they can beat Russell?I'm not sure they do.

I agree with much in your post but would have liked to have seen it without the typical cut- this time about holding back students.
While I don't disagree with this statement, I have to note the irony of your pointing out the "cut" in ZoneBusters post. Truly ironic.

Rose Hill, like most every other school in the area, has kids who have been held back a year. Even your beloved favorite has, in recent years, held back students for athletics.
This statement is true. I believe that if someone wanted to do the work, it would be interesting to look at what percentage of athletes have been held back, broken down by school and grade level. For the record, let me state that Li'l Frances is a benificiary of the fact that he was either going to be an old eighth grader, or a young freshman. We chose to go with the "old" eighth grader. I am saying this as a "truth in advertising" move.

Whether those kids "panned out" may be another story.
You were saying something earlier about "the typical cut"?

In fact, I was told by a school leader in another local school, that some Ashlanders approached the school about allowing some elementary boys to repeat an elementary grade at the school. I was told that the families abandoned the idea when they were told that they would have to pay tuition.
Well, I have to say that I am shocked and surprised to see this in a post from you, Scooterbob. You go to great lengths to denounce "hearsay" as a source of information, and yet, that is exactly what this statement is. Once again, we see the irony of the post...

... However, an honest assessment must conclude that Rose Hill, for whatever reason, has had superior players.
I'm sure that many of the Rose Hill kids are fine athletes, but I'll debate this point with you. It would be prudent to recognize the fact that, below the 7th grade, the Ashland athletes are divided among 6 or 7 different grade schools, while Rose Hill has all of its players on one team. Not a small fact to consider when making the argument that the Rose Hill kids are somehow superior by virtue of their won/loss record against the Ashland (or Boyd County) school teams.

For example, Rose Hill has repeatedly defeated Ashland's 8th grade team. The games are usually fairly close. However, it is noteworthy that Rose Hill does so with 7th graders since only one 8th grader, Alex Malloy, plays on the team. I'm sure that is a concern to you.
... and an honest assessment would acknowledge the fact (as pointed out by ZoneBuster) that a large number of those 6th and 7th graders could be at least a year ahead in school ...

I agree that Rose Hill has superior coaching at several levels including, as you said, the JV. However, you can't win without talent and there is a decided difference in the talent levels of the two schools from the 9th grade down.
I would say that both schools have some solid coaches in the systems. From a coaching standpoint, any given level might be an advantage to either system, so I'd call that one a push.

Without a goodly number of transfers, Ashland should have problems the next few years. As T-CAT4LIFE, said, they will "just reload". The question will be in regard to whether the gun is reloaded with bullets or bbs.
You were saying something earlier about "the typical cut"?

Ashland will be fine, as the younger players grow and mature. I think that if history teaches us anything, it shows that in any given system, there are peaks and valleys of talent. Ashland is no different, but I would withhold the death pronouncement for the basketball program for a couple of years or so.

This post is not meant as a negative toward Ashland ...
Of course it's not.

... but merely one person's analysis, based upon a decent level of personal knowledge of the facts, of the situation as it now stands. None of us know the future and can only use the facts as they now appear.
Or is it possible that this is based upon a decent level of personal view of the situation, with the natural bias that we all carry?

It is pleasant to see a few facts. All schools named specifically by Armchair Coach do, indeed, have "holdbacks". So Zonebuster23, shall we say that those in vulnerable houses shouldn't be shooting bb guns?

We don't like the things you are saying about Dakota. You have not see him play much if you think he gets rattled. Dakota and Chad have lead their AAU team to five strait State Championships.

I doubt that there are student sections as rowdy as there were yesterday at the game. Anyone who was watching could clearly see that he was getting rattled.

When you step as far out on the limb as I did on this game, you have to even give yourself some credit!

Holdbacks are no longer an issue. I dare say every team has some for various reasons, including athletics, young age, lack of maturity and even academics. Let get past that and talk about basketball. If they are a sophmore or eigth grader at their school, then that is what they are.
