I believe the "lifetime" clause is more about him having the option to step down and still earn about $1M a year, presumably in an ambassador-type role. As I understand, if UK wants to terminate Calipari after this season, it would cost about $40M.

Cal will be the coach at Kentucky until he doesn't want to be. Kudos to his agent for landing that ridiculous deal on his behalf.

This link will take you to his current contract. It is 17 pages long and lays out everything.

To answer the original question his contract calls for him being paid 75% of the remaining contract through the end of the 28-29 season, which is approximately $31,875,000 if he were fired without cause.

If he wants to trigger the $1,000,000 a year Special Assist to the AD (fundraising) job, he is asked to notify the university by April 15th of each year.

I think Cal in that role for a few years when Kentucky transitions to a new coach, would be great for Kentucky.  Calipari is a great salesman, he can continue to sell Kentucky basketball without being the head coach.

He definitely can't coach!
