This is the game result from last Friday night, October 19th. Looks like we didn't end up with a final score thread posted for this one.

I went ahead and made the thread since @FrankNicodemus asked me if I had any background on the series prior to the KHSAA Scoreboard results for the series, which only date back to 1998. I figured I'd go ahead and post it in the final score thread, and then realized there wasn't ever one started after the game.

So a little late with the info, Frankie, but here you go:

Scott opened up for the 1978/79 school year, and fielded their first football team for the 1978 season under head coach Dave Browning. Highlands and Scott started playing each other in the 1979 season because they were both moved into the same sub-district in 3A football. That's because in 1979, the KHSAA switched over from their long-outdated and somewhat flawed Dickinson System which had a pretty archaic point system for determining playoff births, and they moved to the first iteration of their region/district playoff system.

In the early region/district playoff system, each of the 4 classes was split into 4 regions. Then each of the regions was split into 2 districts, and each district had 2 sub-districts. Highlands and Scott were both in 3A Region 3, which looked like this from 1979 through 1986, when the KHSAA switched to a region/district system that basically looks like the current one:

3A Region 3
1st District, Sub-District 1: Conner, Cov Cath, Lloyd, Simon Kenton
1st District, Sub-District 2: Highlands, Newport, Scott
2nd District, Sub-District 1: Bell Co, Cawood, Knox Central, Rockcastle Co, Whitley Co
2nd District, Sub-District 2: Danville, Estill Co, Jessamine Co, Lincoln Co

Series Record:
1979 Highlands 49-15
1980 Highlands 28-8
1981 Highlands 27-7
1982 Highlands 28-6
1983 Highlands 28-14
1984 Highlands 46-0
1985 Highlands 43-7
1986 Highlands 14-7
1987 Highlands 35-8
1988 Highlands 64-0
1989 Highlands 27-14
1990 Highlands 26-14
1991 Highlands 33-18
1992 Highlands 53-0
1993 Highlands 42-6
1994 Highlands 40-6
1995 Highlands 27-3
1996 Highlands 27-0
1997 Highlands 41-0
1998 Highlands 72-7
1999 Highlands 49-21
2000 Highlands 65-9
2001 Highlands 35-19
2002 Highlands 35-8
2002 Highlands 52-0 (3A Playoffs)
2007 Highlands 58-0
2007 Highlands 50-0 (5A Playoffs)
2008 Highlands 67-13
2009 Highlands 67-20
2010 Highlands 33-7
2019 Highlands 42-13
2023 Highlands 57-6

So Highlands has an undefeated 32-0 record against Scott. The closest game Highlands and Scott have had was in 1986 when Highlands only won 14-7. (Gotta wonder if that game was eventually part of the argument made to pressure Coach Eicher into resigning so Highlands could move on to hiring Coach Duffy.) 1983, 1989, and 1990 were all relatively close by Scott's standards too.

And just for funzies, I double-checked how Scott has fared against Cov Cath. They last played in 2010, when Cov Cath got their 21st win over the Eagles to improve to an undefeated 21-0 record against Scott.

Job well done CWB, I was thinking Scott might have been able to find some magic the other night but to no avail.

The 1986 game was loaded with UK Wildcat talent and future NFL studs. 1 guy from each of those teams.  Scott's Senior kicker for Scott, Doug Pelfrey and Highlands Sophomore Mr. Irrelevant but Relevant to us in Ft. Thomas, Marty Moore.  What a great game that was!  Go Birds!!!  No wonder why that 1986 game was so close.

Newport Catholic was in that sub district with Highlands, Scott, and Newport also.

Do you realize how good Marty Moore was in HS? College? Long NFL career? Don't know how old you are but that may have been Scott's best team ever.

That's because they played Thursday. I believe it was on the KHSAA scoreboard.

I ABSOLUTELY realize what a beast Marty Moore was at Highlands, he was a man amongst boys when he would run people over as a RB and destroy people as a LB! Loved watching him every Friday night. He then was the heart and soul at UK. Best thing about Marty is that he is even a greater person off the field. A true gentle giant.

Where did his son Mason go to college?

Mason was an excellent player at LCA.

Did Marty help coach that LCA team?

Mason is at Miami, OH playing.

Marty (I believe) was Def Co for LCA but left coaching after Mason graduated…..could be wrong but I think I saw that.

Just circled back to this...I checked on what you said, because the info and newspaper articles I had definitely didn't list New Cath in the sub-district along with Highlands/Scott/Newport. But it looks like we're both right...Newport Catholic was in 3A, Region 3, District 1, Sub-District 2 along with Highlands, Newport and Scott from 1979-1982, and then they moved down to 2A in 1983. I was looking at the district alignment from 1984 when I wrote up that original post.

CovCath and Highlands fans reaching an odd, never before seen concordance and kumbaya.  I didn't remember when NC made their move out of 3A

So Sir, as you said, we are both right.  And may we both be celebrating state championships in December.
