South Warren (5-1) at Moore (3-2)

The Spartans, fresh off their BYE week, travel north up I-65 to take on 5-A opponent Moore.  This will be the first time these teams have ever met and it will be the second and last trip to Louisville for South this season barring an unforeseen playoff venture to this part of the state.  South Warren played a terrific game vs DuPont Manual back on the 15th of this month and fell 38-35, but it was a great game with both teams overcoming earlier adversity.

Moore isn’t a team I know much about even though I live in the same city they do.  They have beaten lowly Shawnee, Frankfort and Wagner with a combined record of 4-13.  They have lost to Grayson County (26-6) and Lafayette (25-12) and reside in the lower third of the 5A RPI rankings.  They have 41 players on their roster.  They have 23 players who have played in at least 3 games this season.  That feels pretty thin to me.

Interestingly on a more positive note, the Mustangs are led by Freshman QB Javis Wallace who is 47 for 90 for 537 yards and 8 TDs but does have 5 INTs.  Wallace and SR FB Nathan Moore (with 9 TDs) both have over 300 yards rushing on the season thru 5 games.  JR WRs Tristan Jackson (6 catches for 168 yards and 2 TDs) and Keyon Johnson (19 catches for 118 yards and 4 TDs) are the most productive pass receivers on the team.  More interesting info includes Moore has not attempted 1 extra point try this entire season instead going for 2 every time.   RB Moore, Jackson and Johnson go both ways for the Mustangs and are in the Top 4 tacklers on the team.

South Warren went on the road to the Swamp Construction Zone at Greenwood High School 2 Friday’s ago and took control early and really took the air out of the Gators following a blocking in the back call on the opening kickoff that Tel Tel Long took to the house.  A subsequent punt snap over the Gators punters head, a short field for South and a quick 9-0 lead was the result.  The Spartans were again led by star JR QB Byrce Button who was 13 for 20 for 314 yards and 5 TDs vs 1 INT.  7 Spartan receivers got in the act and South really never felt challenged in this game IMO.

Based on all this, I just don’t see how the Mustangs will win this game given the strength of the South defense is their run defense.  But we shall see.  How do you see this one going?

I saw them against Lafayette last week and do think numbers played a part in their loss. You could tell they were gassed about midway thru the 3rd. One thing Lafayette does have is some depth. I didn’t realize their QB was freshman. I thought he played well and had some nice throws. Moore’s D struggled to get off the field and Lafayette had 4 or 5 long drives that I think contributed to them getting tired.

Odd scheduling from South on this one.

How did this get on the schedule? As in Moore must not have known South's pedigree. To go from Shawnee and Lafayette to South Warren is a tall task.

Moore had a JCPS team scheduled and then that team pulled out in like, July. Believe South was just looking for a 10th game.

I think this is easy game for South.  Grayson beat Moore?  Usually South has a dominant defense, but I don’t see it this year, at least not up to their standards.  A lot of points given up.  Given up 555 yards on the ground in 6 games or 93 a game.  Looking closer, when you factor out North Hardin- very pass happy team, Hendo and Greenwood.  Against Manual, Southwestern and Gibson Southern, they’ve given up 504 yards on the ground or 168 per contest.   Not that it will matter against pass happy BG coming up.  This is a theme in 5A this year - not great defenses.

As far as Moore, they were beaten badly by Grayson, who was beaten by Marshall, who Owensboro beat 50-0 (43-0 at half).  This won’t be pretty.
