Sitting here wired after the big game!  A couple thoughts about the game:

1.  Early in the game with BG up 7-0, South drove into the red zone and on 3rd down Button put the ball on the money to a South WR who dropped the ball in the end zone.  They ended up settling for a FG, but those lost 4 points ended up being the difference in the game.

2.  Conyers had a plus/minus night.  Plus - BG definitely didn't throw at him, but they did run at him some.  But he was clearly an asset in the pass game.  And the TD catch and run was very athletic.  Minus - there weren't any other plays for him outside of 1 nine yard run in the first half.  Think of how many plays and yards Quisenberry had for Boyle.  I just thought Conyers didn't get enough opportunities to get it done for South tonight.

3.  BG RB Javon Huddleston was the man!  He broke an 80 yard sprint the first play from scrimmage.  He took a swing pass and broke 3 tackles and took it 70 yards to the house.  He also made some good catches on outlets when the Purples needed that.  HUGE tonight!

4.  Kicking - I'm calling even.  BG kicker didn't match Souths kicker for FGs, but he did better for touchbacks and that was big to keep it out of Conyers hands!

5.  The Trenches - I'm calling even too.  I thought both OLines controlled the game.

6.  The QBs - I love what both did tonight.  I didn't think South used Buttons passing ability enough tonight.  Love how Bailey battled tonight and didn't get down when he threw the INT, which was a great play by DB Burnes.

7.  Coaching:  For South, positives - They had a game plan and they stuck with it.  They committed to pounding the ball at the interior of the BG D and it worked for the most part.  Negatives - They were REALLY vanilla with their play calls.  I expected throws to Conyers down the field.  They didn't do that at all.  It kinda seemed like they were going to win or lose by pounding the run and I think that short-circuited some of the talent of Souths players.

For BG - positives:  Great halftime adjustments.  Things just clicked better for BG in the second half.

Negatives - the first half plays were uneven.  3rd and 2 inside the South 30 when you are moving the Ball and have South backpeddaling and you go for the bomb.  Gutsy, but....  4th and 2, you run your RB with the least leg strength and don't make it.   Just missed opportunities and it's really easy to armchair QB here I know.   

From here:  For BG, you are in the drivers seat for the District, but can't get cocky when Greenwood comes across town in a couple weeks.  St X at the end of the year would be nice to get, but to me just try to keep injuries to a minimum.  That game will more than challenge BG, learn from it, but live to fight another day too.  These past 2 games (and really Boyle County too), it just feels BG has turned a corner.  While BG is not the 5A favorite, they are now in the hunt for a playoff run.  Game on!!!

For South, the season isn't over.  Yes, you are back to 500 now and yes, you'd like to have won the games you've lost on the season (which is 3 games by 14 total points), but I think South must learn to take these setbacks and use them to get better.  What am I talking about?  I'm suggesting South circle the wagons now (they will win the rest of their regular season games and host a first round game) and use this game film to get better for the final run of the season.  In 5A, there are still only a few teams that can play with South.  Onward Spartans!

 

 

 

Performance of the night (I would think one of top performances in the state, last night!):

Huddleston, RB for Purples, rushed for 142 yards, received for 119 yards and had 3 TDs for the Purples. 
 

Unless I missed an injury last night, Purples should have Kibawa back in 2 weeks vs Gators and that should put them at full strength in the final stretch of regular season.  Can’t ask for more than that. 
 

Great game/atmosphere last night.
 

Someone convince me that there is a better, more pure sport than High School football?

It sure is a great day to be a Bowling Green Purple.

Big win Purples.  Looked very low scoring until an explosive 4th quarter.

South Warren is now 0-1 on the turf, for those keeping up. ?

Great adjustments led to this win. Bailey had way more time in the second half. With that said, both teams represented BG well! I’m sure this won’t be their last meeting in 22..

Owensboro may have something to say about that if that’s how the games line up.
