Coaching Change @ Cawood

Featured Replies

so you are saying Harlan can play this style of defense but Cawood can't? Also i do not believe he does alot of man coverage.

I would guess the Brain is just saying its a different system and would take awhile to make an adjustment. I think thats pretty standard with any system change.

Harlan had a much better secondary the past couple of years with some hard hitters who were very aggressive. For some reason, Cawood has lacked that in recent years. They do have some young guys who may be able to fill those roles.

Cawood ended the season with around 30 players.

Not at all. Where Cawood has played for the last decade a simple 3 Deep coverage, the secondary's role has been more of a "last result" buffer between the offense and the endzone. Coach Perry's system is a 7 man front system, but in facing dominant running schemes, more men are often needed at the line of scrimmage. The adjustment to this is sometimes complicated, and takes a little while for adjustment.

I am pretty sure that Coach Perry does not play much man coverage.

In some cases, it's a combo coverage, but 90 percent of the time, it really is a man coverage, just disguised somewhat

This is very true. Not much zone out of this guy at all. Only man for the most part. He likes cover 2 against option style teams and cover 4 against deep passing teams (both are pretty rare anymore).

so he is not doing any read coverage?

Yes and no.

W/O giving away his entire scheme of coverages I will let you know that he has one coverage that he likes to use in which the corner and the safety do some "reading." However, most of the time this will result in the corner and the safety each being locked on a receiver (especially in a twins/trips/quads set) and virtualy no zone coverage being played at all. So it is pretty much a variation of a man coverage, just disguised fairly well for those who don't know the system since it will look like cover 2 in certain situations.

Brain if coach Perry is going to run the triple he better find a quarterback that can run this type of offense and that may not be as easy as some might think.

I agree.

I know he isn't an option style QB but does anyone know if the Caldwell kid is back in the weight room this year? I know he had some promise as a freshman and then he didn't play last year for some reason. I don't know much about his speed but his arm isn't bad...

I agree with you 100 percent. If the option game is going to be sucessful, the quarterback had better be able to make the right reads AND be a threat to go the distance on the keep play. Alot of coaches use and Option-On-Me approach, but in the style of offense Coach Perry wants to run, the quarterback had better be able to do some reading on the run. I don't think necessarily that the quarterback will have to be a big time passing threat, and that speed may take precedent in this style over a pocket passer with limited range

well if he studied under Harp his defense is BASED on the 3-4 principle. What he has ran at Harlan the last several years comes from the 3-4 scheme. Now having said that alot of offensive sets around here has dictated a 5-2 look but his scheme is still playing out of the base 3-4 look. His change up front , which most teams have is a 4-3. From what i can tell and i am by no means an expect it looks like he plays alot of true cover two which reguires reading from the sec. Also, i have seen him play cover four and man as well. He does a good job of getting his sec involved. Whether he has a 3 or 5 man front his base scheme is still the 3-4.

Its easy to see that he understands and coaches defense well. The key to his success is going to be how well he does on the other side of the ball.

To me if he is planning on running the triple he will need someone that has some football smarts as far as READS GO. THAT WILL BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ARM STRENGTH OR SPEED FOR STARTS.

I agree. I was only saying that his "base defense" (meaning the one he is in 85% of the time) is a 5-2. As far as being based off of a 3-4, I can see that as well. I agree on the QB as well...

I think the 3-4 and 5-2 terminology is interchangable, as you have pointed out. Alot of colleges in the 70's and 80's played this similar style of defense, and a main recruiting tool for college coaches was telling certain defensive end prospects that they would be playing an outside linebacker position, instead of a down position. However, again, as you said, formations dictated alot of play on the line for strong side linebackers, and for weak side linebackers in 3rd and short and goaline sets. Coverages vary, and Cawood may show as many as 10 differnet ones throughout a season, but they are taught in a few fundamental concepts. Coach Perry's style of defense is similar to the philosophies of some offensive coordinators, who want to give alot of formations, but actually run a few base plays.

At the quarterback postition, and running the option I would take a smart kid over one that may be a better athlete any day.
