Who:   Simon Kenton (2-9, 2021) at Oldham County (8-3, 2021)

Where:  Oldham Co HS, Buckner, KY  BELL FIELD

When:  Friday 8/19/22   kickoff 7:30 pm

Broadcast:  Free live hi-def video coverage begins at 7 pm ET on www.pegasussportsky.com    (available afterward as a free archive on the site)

It's blue/white on blue/white in Buckner Friday as the Pioneers roll into Oldham County to take on the Colonels.

The two schools started up a home-and-home engagement last year, with Oldham County winning on the road, 35-29, over the Pioneers with a strong second half.  Sam Young was 16 of 22 passing 3 TDs 0 INT and 273 yards in the win; he also rushed 11 times for 46 yards and another score.   Six different OC receivers caught passes, and three different receivers had TDs.

SK was also led by the QB, with Chase Crone passing for 174 yards and 2 scores, and running for 105 yards and a TD.

Crone returns for the Pioneers as they try to return the favor on the Colonels' home turf, but the Colonels have lost a ton of seniors - including Young, who's now playing football at the University of Louisville.

For the Pioneers, besides Crone (1,638 yards passing, 13TDs, plus 693 yards rushing with 14 scores), the Pioneers return their leading rusher from last year (senior Jayden Lawson, 898 yards / 11 TDs rushing in 2021) and leading receiver (senior Chase Williams, 59 catches 800 yards 6 TDs in 2021).     Junior kicker Andrew Petty was perfect on 5 of 5 field goal attempts in 2021, and the top tackler - senior LB Josh Bowling, 123 total tackles in 2021 - is also back.    If the OL holds up, the Pioneers look to field a veteran group of skill players who will all be one year older, faster, stronger, wiser - and proven.

But it's not offense that SK needed last year.   The 2021 Pioneers put up the points - SK was held under 20 points only in their final two games, against powerhouses Woodford County and Dixie Heights (playoffs) and averaged 27.6 ppg.   The issue was that the Pioneers gave up a whopping 42.5 ppg....what the defense shows on Friday will tell us a lot about SK's prospects in 2022.

Oldham County got off to a hot start last year, winning its first six games, before struggling late and finishing 8-3.   Like SK, they fell in round one of the playoffs, dropping a 42-9 decision to Madison Central on the road in 6A round 1.    Gone are so many of Oldham's starters via graduation, but especially stinging to the Colonels' 2022 hopes was the transfer of some incredibly talented underclassmen.

That's not to say the Colonels' cupboard is bare.    Oldham returns a talented trio of running backs in junior Caden Sheppard (470 yards rushing / 3 scores), a bowling ball of a runner who is hard to tackle.....junior Kayden Osbourne....and senior Grant Gilchrist, a speedy runner who showed a ton of promise last year before an injury cut his season short after just 4 games.    Top wideout Jaxon Elkins, a tall, lanky receiver who led the team with 397 receiving yards last season on just 16 catches, returns as well.    Throwing the ball to Elkins and the other receivers, however - for the first time in four years in Buckner - will be a new QB, junior Zach Davis.

Experience gives SK an advantage as well in this one......9 offensive returnees in the starting unit and 7 returning defensive starters. Oldham had a large group of starters graduate last year...

SK returns a monster Oline 4 guys over 280. Dline is just has big. Defense gave up 14 points in 2 scrimmages and look really good. Should be a great night for the Pioneers!

Just saw OC play Manual last night. This is a “rebuilding” year for sure. I would guess their O and D line average weight around 200-210. Line play clearly an issue for them and an extremely small secondary. I look for SK to win in dominant fashion.

Yea SK has 5 kids that start over 280 and 2 linebackers over 215.

This will be a tall order for the Colonels in their home opener.

Two teams met for the first time last year in Independence.....OC leads the series, 1-0

Big game for both teams to see where they are now and I think both equally can use this game for some expectations moving forward. I think this one is a little more important for Simon Kenton from that perspective. Good luck to both teams and on the rest of your seasons.
