3A Russell travels to Paul Laurence Dunbar Next Friday 9-24-21 for a 7:30 P.M. Start.

Paul Dunbar comes into this game with a 1-5 record with a 68-28 win over Breathitt County, and losses to Madison Central 34-24, Woodford County 68-12, Fredrick Douglass 56-13, Scott County 55-0.

Russell comes into this game with a 3-2 record. Russell has wins over Boone County 19-6, Raceland 28-18,Montgomery County 38-21, and losses to Wheelersburg, Ohio 35-16, Lawrence County 39-28.

Can Russell roll into Lexington and come away with the win?

Make no mistake about it ,if Russell does win I would consider this an upset regardless of PLD’s record.

PLD played Madison central to a 34-24 game while Madison Central only lost 21-12 to a Really good Lexington Christian Academy team who comes from the same talent rich city as Dunbar.

Russell or the NEKY area in general does not have that kind of talent floating around. Not only that ,Russell is competing with 2 other schools in the county and Next to Russell you have Ashland. You also have some really good Ohio State Power football programs in Ohio across the river in Wheelersburg and Ironton.

Russell does good for being a small school in a non talent rich area with 2A numbers playing in 3A to reduce travel in the District but this game is a tall task.

I believe PLD is actually 1-4. Coach Johnson is a very good coach and will have his kids ready. They are you g and will figure it out. I think this game will be good for them and they will come out on top. I will take Dunbar

I get that a small school beating a bigger school sometimes could be perceived as an "upset" but in this case, I wouldn't go that far.

As for the talent rich city, Lafayette, Dunbar & Tates Creek got beat by a combined score of 146-0 last Friday.  If Douglass woulda been able to play Henry Clay, it would have probably been 200+ to 0.  The state of the public school programs in Lexington is really down outside of Douglass & Bryan Station.

Lexington has far more talent than neky. If you need more proof just look up the kids from Lexington who have went d1 over the years compared to neky. Facts are facts,Lexington is a huge city.

I can think of 1 player off hand from Russell who has went  d1. Nathan Mcpeek went to Marshall but they weren’t division 1 when he played. Tj Maynard played at UK. There has been very few d1 players at Russell. I would guarantee Paul Dunbar has had more d1 players over the years then Russell has.

Even with Dunbar being down this year, this game will be a great challenge for Russell. The Bulldogs will have athleticism that Russell doesn't typically see year to year. They've given up a lot of points, but look at the recent schedule: Woodford County (#4 in 5A), Douglass (#1 in 5A), and Scott County (unranked, but it's Scott County).

I'm not sold on Russell this year. A win here would be encouraging.

Marshall was FBS (known then as Division 1-A) when Nate was there. They made the jump in 1997.

Thanks , I think my argument still stacks up pretty well against Johnny Utah. What’s that 2 d1 players  since Russell high school opened in 1913?
