Nell is already utilizing a 9 person rotation right now. Sam is starting at JV and is doing very well down there hitting the 3's. She will get her chance to show her stuff at the varsity level next year at the gaurd position. Boone is loaded at that position so it is hard for everyone to get minutes. This year you have JC, Switzer, Sparrow, and Sandlin garnering most of the playing time. She has gotten in this year and scored some points. Her time will come she just has to be ready.

You guys coudn't be more correct. This game definitely deserved some press. And unfortanetely it didn't get what it deserved. Just like so many other great NKY games. In all sports! I played high school baseball for Boone. And unless it was against Cov Cath, or a big district game we got nothing. It's frustrating because there has been some classics NKY games throughout my 4 years of High School that I was looking forward to checking out in the paper and ended up with nothing. I guess it is what it is and there is nothing we can do about it...Anyway Amen to what the Old Guy had to say. Next yr? I have seen all the above play(they are good) and w/the exception of the 2 starters I don't see what Sparrow/Sandlin do that Bowling doesn't do. She does at least look like she knows what is going on and doesn't get lost playing defense. Sandlin is a great ball handler and gives Bradley a breather but that is it. Why wouldn't Bowling be in the rotation w/Sparrow/Sandlin?

 

I have been told by friends what happened last and I would have to guess she is still doing the time in jail from that. I went to watch Bowling at Beechwood(Smith, (NDA) and Bowling were the guards) and granted she was playing lessor competition but still in the 7/8th grade holding her own against Jr/Sr's, she can play just a shame what happened last yr and still paying the price. Sami hang in there, all the hard work will pay off.

Just curious, but 3ptshooter seems to be implying something happened last year that Bowling is paying for now. Would Fookes really not play the better player to spite someone? This is one of the more uninformed posts that I have seen in a while.

 

If I remember correctly (and to take out the mystery--I DO) the family moved one time sometime before Bowling's ninth grade year. To imply that this family was jumping around and seeking "out the best place to play" is pathetic and a joke. The family bought a house in a different area. Big deal. She has lived in district (with a bonafide change of address that was obvioiusly approved by the KHSAA) the entire time that she has went to Boone.

 

Bowling is a junior now. I am not sure if the situation from last year plays into the equation or not--and honestly--I don't care. I will give the coach the benefit of the doubt here. But--there are some things that don't make sense.

 

I am not real sure how the others mentioned are better than Bowling at this point. Maybe a little--but I am not seeing a huge difference (if there even is one at all). Also--a couple of the early season losses (that are justified losses--but still interesting since Boone County was supposed to be the second coming of the Dream Team in NKY this year) made me wonder a little bit about who the right 8 or 9 are. I am sure that the coach knows what she is doing--but there is always room for an objective thought process.

Judging by this post--maybe Bowling should take the rest of the year off--and start working towards next year ........

 

9 People in a rotation is pretty sweet. But--this is where most basketball coaches let their egos get in the way. Why stick with 9 when you have 10 who are good enough to play all of the time? That is 2 separate platoons. It appears to me that you could bury a team physically (and even more so mentally) when you could sub for your entire team ..............

qs, you are exactly right , when you sub 5 for 5 you are very strong!!

 

I wasn't at the game so i cannot say much. I will say, if coach Darpel only played 7 girls that pretty much cost them the game IMO. I am pretty familiar with ND and I am sure she should have and could have played 9 girls.

 

I would have thought BC would have pressed from the tip knowing how good ND is in the half court game. The next game should be very interesting!

Just that sometimes players/parents overestimate the ability of their son/daughter and move ito a district where, in this case it appears, the girl isn't good enough to play at the varsity level by her junior year. I have no idea what happened last year, and don't care, but can't believe a coach of Fookes' ability wouldn't play her best players. My poin is some players miss out on the opportunity of playing an entire career at the varsity level by shooting to high. I think the same thing happened to te Jordan girl at ND. She left Brossart where she played a lot as a freshman and now as a senior at ND isn't playing at all. Sometimes the just PLAYING is more important than WHERE you play. that seems to b the case here. No implication of any impropriety was intended, maybe just poor judgement.

Amazing game!!! Definitely got my 3 dollars worth last night. I was very very impressed with the game and both teams. I have been supporting those Boone seniors once sophomores since my senior year and I had to get out since I am home for break to watch them. I picked an absolute classic. IMO there won't be a game girls or guys except for maybe a Holmes Cov Cath matchup in the boys department that will match this game until March.

 

You guys have all summed up this game perfectly but I can't help myself from adding some insight even though I will have some Boone bias. But I do think it's pretty accurate.

 

There were 2 factors to why Boone won this basketball game. First off, the depth of Boone's team vs. the depth of Notre Dame. Mrs. Fookes used her second rotation of players great. When Boone's second five was on the floor there was honestly no difference from when the starting five was on the floor. That's actually when Boone made there run. The Rebels had there second group on the floor when they started pressuring Notre Dame making there 11 point comeback. That second five will be a key for Boone the rest of the year. If they can provide that spark the sky's the limit for this team. Notre Dame I think they just got wore down towards the end of this game. They don't have that kind of depth atleast from what I saw. When Boone turned that press on Notre Dame couldn't handle it either from lack of point guard play or just by getting tired. But they are a legit team.

 

The second factor IMO was the coaching like you guys have said. Both Darpel and Fookes are excellent coaches. 2 of the best around. But in this game a back and forth battle most of the way was won by Mrs. Fookes implementing the press in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame and Coach Darpel had no answer for it. Notre Dame took it to the Rebels the whole game. Crunch time in the 4th and OT the Pandas looked like a completely different team out there.

 

Lastly...a couple notes

 

- it's only december...both coaches will have made adjustments the next time they play. And both teams will be much better later on in the season.

 

- Boone has the depth to use that press the whole game...honestly I don't see a team in NKY who can handle that for an entire ball game. If Boone goes to that full court trap/defense more often they are going to be very tough to stop.

 

- Notre dame is very very good in the half court set. IMO there should run offense through Drees everytime down the court. With her and Tierney having the ball in there hands makes them much better.

 

- And finally......the ninth region championship...Boone VS Notre Dame...It's going to happen and be a great one. I don't see anybody else standing there way. They are clearly the 2 best teams.

 

^ I think she is the one that every opposing coach hopes handles the ball.

 

 

No surprise that Boone won! I think Fookes was trying to not press during the game. I think she only went to it towards the end to win the game. I bet if you would have asked her at the beginning if she would need to use the press to win she would have said no. But she made the adjustment to get the victory. IMO she did not want to press NDA this game but use it later on in the season when they meet again. She also started off the gameby playing the post players 1 on 1 but after the 1st qtr. noticed it was not working so well. She then switched to fronting the post with guards dropping down on the helpside. The same game plan they used in the regional finals last year, forcing NDA to shoot outside. NDA's coach lack of adjusting to theBoone defense taking away the entry to the post was big. Darpel's refusal to go past 6 players critical. Staying with the "big" lineup while Boone was pressing not very smart.

 

Boone will win by double digits next time they play.

Even though it was a big 1 vs. 2 match-up Fookes used it to prepare her team for March as evidenced with her liberal substituting thru out the game.That will only make them better as the season goes along.

Fair enough--but you are still implying that this parent moved his kid into the district to specificially play at a certain school.

 

That wouldn't fit the truth in this scenario. There are times in life when the parent is in a position to upgrade their current living situation. I don't think that means that the parent was overestimating their kids ability.

 

More like--the parent found a nice place to live that was affordable within their budget.

 

As far as the rest of your points go--they are solid. But for me--this is an objective conversation ...... so my open mind tells me that Bowling is just as good (if not better) than a couple of the players in the rotation. I am not questioning Nell's judgment--but she is not above reproach here. As the coach--it is her decision--and those decisions have proven to be solid over the years.

 

I just think that Bowling can add a little more (without taking anything away) to a solid team. No big deal.

Congrats to the Lady Rebels on a great win. Really enjoy watching them play. Cirlce Feb. 9th on your calendar as the Lady Royals from Mason come visiting. Should be a great ballgame to be sitting in the bleachers for. Boone spoiled senior nite for Mason last year but man oh man what a game. Look forward to the rematch.

Since this is one of my best friends daughter's being talked about let me chime in. I know her dad would not have moved to a new school district where he thought she would not be "good enough" to play. If I recall, she started JV/dressed V at Boone as a freshman and was starting JV/dressing V as a soph. Things weren't working well w/the JV coach and she quit during a game against NDA. She did apolgize and deeply regrets how she went about leaving the team, however, she did want to still play for Boone. Therefore, had a meeting before school got out last yr and Coach decided to give her a new shot as she had to go thru tryouts like everyone else.

 

This is what is being referred to about still paying the price for last yr. I think QS is saying that there are a few girls playing that don't do anything that Bowling can't do. If anyone has watched her play over the yrs, you would have to agree that she shoots the 3 as well as anyone when in the game. Her defense is probably slightly better than the younger girls do to the difference in age and strength.

 

It don't matter, her dad says she is happy again playing and that is what counts, she is happy.

Sorry, one more thing, IMO, the little freshman point guard does handle the ball better.

As the parent of another freshman from a different school....just a note on the "little freshman point guard at Boone"........Look around at some of the other schools and you will see several freshman players who can handle the ball much better AND play awesome defense And shoot the ball all while keeping a positive attitude and not trash talking her opponent. Our experience with Heather's behavior in middle school over the past three years was that it was unexcusable.....Hopefully Fookes has made it known to her that she doesn't tolerate such behavior.

shortdad, if you know Coach Fookes, you know she will not tolerate any ill mannered behavior.

 

I can't say I have seen any freshman games w/the exception of a few Boone games but I have not seen any freshman point guards handle the ball any better in a JV/V game than Sandlin. As I have previously stated, she lacks the strength/size to guard some of the older players but w/the ball in her hands, she is one of the quickest and sees the floor very well.
