I will let InDaZone or 3ptshooter or another Boone County fan report the game, but if 3pshooter tells you that the Boone press beat NDA he is blowing smoke. It wasn't the Boone County girls who beat NDA nor was it the NDA girls who lost the game. It was Fookes out coaching Darpel again... See you again at NDA, and in the Region.

No students (other than frosh and soph basketball players) from NDA as per usual, and a few students from Boone, but a rather good crowd of adults, considering it's only two days until Christmas.

I think you put to much blame on Notre Dames coach and give to much credit to Fookes. Not taking anything away from Coach Fookes I think she is one of the best High School coaches in the State. She had more weapons at her disposal than Darpel did that was the difference in the game. Knowing what rotation to put in at what time is a luxury most coaches do not have. I don't have the stats but bench scoring will show a very lopsided match. My hats off to Tierney pobably one of the best games I have seen her play ever. She hounded my daughter all night and had one of the best offensive outputs I have seen her have. She went in for one rebound and I swear it took 5 seconds for her to come down. Everyone who was there got there moneys worth on this game. Good luck to both teams the rest of the year.

Katie did play great, pretty much like she did against St. Henry in the Region. She plays with her heart and all out, all the time, and I love watching her play.

 

My problem with Darpel, (note she is as good of a practice coach as you could what to have, and is as nice of a person as there is around) but she doesn't seem (IMO) to think ahead in the game, but just at the moment during the game, and she doesn't use her time outs very well.

 

The player who impressed me the most on the Boone team (other than your daughter) was the freshmen number 34. That young lady, will be starting by the end of the season as your point guard. She really impressed me....

I think I will keep our coach. You validated my point exactly. When you have bench players that can step up when asked it makes the coach look like a superstar that she made that decision.

 

I think JC will be Boone's point for the remaining 3 yrs, but Heather will get as much playing time as she can handle (that is #34) She still sees the game at warp speed like all Freshman do so she makes Frshman mistakes. Fookes will mold her if she wants to be teached.

 

I take my hat off to all our bench players they won the game for us last night. Sparrow hitting clutch 3's. Findley giving us good minutes in the post rebounding and scoring, and Reed the most athletic of all our girls banging away at Dickman and Drees and scoring to boot. Not to mention Sandlin at the point to give JC a breather. YOU GIRLS ARE THE BOMB.:ylsuper:

NDA at 9 and 1 with Seton, Ursuline, Montgomery County, Assumption, Rockcastle, undefeated Simon Kenton and Boone in the first ten games. This is an AWESOME record. Congrats to Coach Darpel and her Pandas.

 

Great comeback by Boone in what all have to admit is an evenly matched pair of teams. Makes for a great 9th region and for me keeps it very interesting. And lets not discount the other 9th region contenders.

 

To all observers, come out and see these two fine teams and lets get one of them to have a strong showing at State regardless of who it is. Games like these make both teams stronger and better and is exactly what each of them needs at this early stage of the season.

oldguy, I won't blow any smoke! When Boone went down 12, I turned to a friend, a NDA fan, and said it's getting ready to storm, the press will be coming soon. Sure enough, the press was put on. There is no out coaching to it, although Nell is the best. IMO, NDA does not have a "true" point guard, someone that can handle constant pressure and not throw the ball away. They have some very good players, not many that handle the ball well. Jackson is probably their best but that is not her game, she is a shooting guard. I think they miss Jones, a true point guard!!

 

The Boone freshman(#34), very quick, fast w/the ball but if you watch the whole game she can't keep up on "D", that is a strength thing, nothing she can do about that. As stated, Jacy will be the point for the rest of the yr and the next 2yrs w/Heather giving her a breather.

 

Sparrow came in and hit some big 3's which changed the game around. As in the case w/Heather, Sparrow doesn't seem to be able to keep up on the defensive end of the floor either but as anything else sometimes you have to sacrifice some defense for more offense and visa versa. Hicks shot the ball this week better than ever, Switzer played great. Brasseaux, I think, did not play the entire 4th qt nor any in the OT, therefore, Findley stepped to the plate and did well.

 

Katie Tierney, what a joy to watch a kid play so hard every minute she is on the floor. I think if she had the ball more at the end she may have been able to hold Boone off. She was my defensive pick if they would have won. Another poor shooting night behind the arc for NDA. I don't think they made a 3 in the semi game and were about 3or4/20 in the final, maybe worse.

 

Depending on the draw in the Region it should be another rematch. Best of luck to my buddies in Atlanta and TN.

Amazing game!!! Definitely got my 3 dollars worth last night. I was very very impressed with the game and both teams. I have been supporting those Boone seniors once sophomores since my senior year and I had to get out since I am home for break to watch them. I picked an absolute classic. IMO there won't be a game girls or guys except for maybe a Holmes Cov Cath matchup in the boys department that will match this game until March.

 

You guys have all summed up this game perfectly but I can't help myself from adding some insight even though I will have some Boone bias. But I do think it's pretty accurate.

 

There were 2 factors to why Boone won this basketball game. First off, the depth of Boone's team vs. the depth of Notre Dame. Mrs. Fookes used her second rotation of players great. When Boone's second five was on the floor there was honestly no difference from when the starting five was on the floor. That's actually when Boone made there run. The Rebels had there second group on the floor when they started pressuring Notre Dame making there 11 point comeback. That second five will be a key for Boone the rest of the year. If they can provide that spark the sky's the limit for this team. Notre Dame I think they just got wore down towards the end of this game. They don't have that kind of depth atleast from what I saw. When Boone turned that press on Notre Dame couldn't handle it either from lack of point guard play or just by getting tired. But they are a legit team.

 

The second factor IMO was the coaching like you guys have said. Both Darpel and Fookes are excellent coaches. 2 of the best around. But in this game a back and forth battle most of the way was won by Mrs. Fookes implementing the press in the 4th quarter. Notre Dame and Coach Darpel had no answer for it. Notre Dame took it to the Rebels the whole game. Crunch time in the 4th and OT the Pandas looked like a completely different team out there.

 

Lastly...a couple notes

 

- it's only december...both coaches will have made adjustments the next time they play. And both teams will be much better later on in the season.

 

- Boone has the depth to use that press the whole game...honestly I don't see a team in NKY who can handle that for an entire ball game. If Boone goes to that full court trap/defense more often they are going to be very tough to stop.

 

- Notre dame is very very good in the half court set. IMO there offense should run through Drees everytime down the court. With her and Tierney having the ball in there hands makes them much better.

 

- And finally......the ninth region championship...Boone VS Notre Dame...It's going to happen and be a great one. I don't see anybody else standing there way. They are clearly the 2 best teams.

One more thing...very disappointed in the Enquirer. I love reading my sports section every day. And while I understand the Bengals, college basketball roundup and other things, this game was a classic and I feel that both teams deserved praise for this battle. I wish they could have had an article. Or atleast got the box score right. Hopefully the Post will step up and have something nice tom.

excellent insight webgems you hit the nail right on the head. I concur with your whole post. Boone has the depth that most coaches dream of. I give credit to these girls even when the bench was in the game the starters that were sitting were rooting them on as if they were the starters. You can't teach that team chemistry. Hats off to the seniors for treating the younger players as equals in all aspects.

If you read the Enquirer, both HS writers are on vacation (Ryan NKy, Tom Ohio). Now I have no problem with those two taking a vacation, heck I am on one right now, but I do have a problem with the Cincinnati Enquirer not covering games (did you notice, the paper cost the same). Why not hire a couple of College Journalism students from NKU, to cover the games when they are gone. Seems to easy of a answer to me at least... Great for the College Student, good for us the Subscribers, and wouldn't cost all that much for the paper.....Seems a win, win situation, of course that is why it isn't being done, it makes too much sense....

 

3ptshooter, I totally agree with you about the lack of coverage in NKy. It is really a shame, and while I could understand that years and years ago, we in NKy were really just to small of a market, I don't buy that any more. To me the biggest abuser is WXIX channel 19. They received their license through Newport but yet KY receives no more coverage from them then we receive from the other three.

Hopefully--someone can answer this one for me ....... I keep looking at Boone's box scores all of the time to see how many points Sam Bowling has scored--yet--at this point, I haven't seen her name at all. I know that Boone has some good players--but I am under the impression that Sam started as a 7th/8th grader at Beechwood (I know--Beechwood)--but she scored a lot of points and did well against tough competition while she was there.

 

Anyone have a clue what is going on with that? I know that Boone is good--but Bowling can light it up when she is in the groove. And--knowing Nell--I know that she would probably like to have a 9 or 10 person rotation as opposed to an 8 person rotation.... anyone have a clue?

 

 

As far as the Enquirer goes--they stink when it comes to NKY sports. But--if you look at some of the other forums on here--people are constantly talking them up. So--someone, somewhere needs to make up their mind. To me, Ernst is a fair writer--but usually biased in his point of view--which is not supposed to be what journalism is about. The rest I will save for myself--simply because I think that he is a homer for certain schools (when it comes to his writing anyway. I know that his assignments probably come from someone higher up). Not to mention that those guys still waste time blogging about OJ Mayo--which was a huge joke anyway. The enquirer has turned into a joke when it comes to NKY sports.
