Oldham County 1-0 faces there old rival in Shelby County 0-1 this Friday in Buckner in what should be a great home opener. I would expect the Colonels to be quite big favirotes especially after Shelbys disappointing 62-7 loss vs Collins. Excited to finally see the Colonels back in action in what should be a full Bell Field.

Shelby is not very good I am hearing. I would say Oldham wins big.

Oldham walks away with this one. I hear Shelby was missing a few last week interested to see the entire package.

Thanks for getting this up, Fighting Colonels!   I was "slow on the draw" this week....

This is resumption of one of the oldest football rivalries in the state, although the students at the two schools really don't see it as a big rivalry anymore, since South Oldham and North Oldham were built in OC's backyard, and Shelby was joined by Collins in their county about a decade ago....

But this is a nice, cross-border matchup between two teams that have been playing each other for a long, long time.   Many years this was a district matchup ....oftentimes a playoff berth was on the line.

FLASHBACK:   1984.   Shelby County was ranked #1 in the state and Oldham #2.   Rockets featured Lee Tinsley at QB and ran Coach Tom Becherer's vaunted triple option attack that he had coached for years.   Shelby was averaging over 30 points per game.    Oldham, coached by Terry Bean, came into the game as one of the stingiest defenses in the state; the Colonels were running the old "wide-tackle six" (6-2) defense made famous by the Chicago Bears of that era, and Oldham was holding opponents to about 3 points per game; they had shut out six opponents.

Both teams were 10-0 heading into the contest in Shelbyville.    In a horrible twist of fate, the two teams were district rivals in a three team district (with Bullitt Central).    Since only one team advanced to the playoffs out of a three team district then, the winner would cement their ranking of #1 in KY, finish the 11-game regular season undefeated, and advance to the playoffs.  The loser, would fall to 10-1, probably still be ranked in the Top 5 - and be eliminated from playoff competition.

Playing in front of a packed stadium with approximately 10,000 fans (Shelby brought in portable bleachers to put in the end zones), Oldham's defense prevailed over Shelby's offense, 10-7, in one of the best-played games I've ever called.

Fast-track to today:   Bill White, Jr., who played on that Shelby County team, is now an assistant coach at Oldham County.    He'll be on the sidelines Friday night in royal blue, working with new head coach Ta'shawn McBroom.

2021:   Oldham comes in after a 35-29 win over Simon Kenton on the road last week.   The Colonels haven't posted stats yet, but the Oldham defense was very opportunistic last week, taking advantage of SK's looseness with the ball to give the Oldham offense chances.

The Colonels return last year's district offensive player of the year in Senior QB Sam Young, who is in his third year as the starter.    Young has thrown for 3,415 yards over the past two seasons (22 games), with 39 TDs and 12 INT.   He's completing 58.7% of his passes.    But Young is also an opportunistic and deceptively fast runner, having rushed for 632 yards last year and 8 scores.    He rushed for 551 yards and 14 TDs two years ago.    Overall, he's averaging 4.9 yards per carry and has rushed for 22 TDs over the past two years.

Shelby comes into the game after a 62-7 drubbing at the hands of county rival Collins last Friday, but not much was really revealed about the Rockets at that game.   Shelby was held to just 158 net offensive yards in the loss, but there will be a lot of new players running, passing, blocking and tackling this week.   About a half a dozen key players - including the starting QB - were quarantined and unavailable to play.   All should be in uniform this week (good news for Shelby fans), but this will essentially be Game 1 for them (bad news).

Oldham County head coach Ta'Shawn McBroom, though not new to the program, is in his first year as head coach at OC.    On the other sideline, Todd Shipley is entering his 22nd season as head coach of the Rockets.

Despite the "new" head coach, I think the Colonels have more going for them in terms of continuity; both from last week and from last year.    OC should probably be the favorite in this one.

I will post updates as I can during the game from the press box.

Rockets with just 40 players on the varsity roster, the smallest roster in Todd Shipley's 22 years as head coach there.    Six players will start both ways for the Rockets.

Shipley has some serious size, though.

Junior Dylan Maynes will start at QB for Shelby after sitting out game one.    Maynes did not throw a pass last year as a sophomore, but did appear in 5 games last season, rushing for 58 total yards on 9 carries.    He predominantly played defense last year.

The backs will be bookends Michael Phillips (5-10 170 pound Senior) and Landon Ford (5-10  170 pound junior).    Phillips led the Rockets in rushing last week with 41 yards on just 6 carries.   He also led Shelby in receiving with 4 catches for 88 yards and the Rockets' lone TD.

Does Shelby have players suspended this week as a result of last weeks brawl with Collins?

News from Oldham County......either a lightning strike or a transformer issue has left the stadium without power.   As of 5:55 the game is almost certainly delayed....but may not be played toll tomorrow night.   Stay tuned.

Not for sure if the stadium has gotten power back, but I do know that the light right by 393 is still not working and bullies Barbeque right across from the stadium power is still out as of 6:30.
