NKY Top 10, Aug 16th edition

Featured Replies

I just want to say first off, that was a fun first week of NKY soccer.  Not a ton of surprises so far but I think we are in the need to hold on to our hats for this week.  We have a ton of NKY matchups that might shake up some of the rankings after this week.  Without further ado here is the Rankings for week 2:

1. NOTRE DAME 1-0 (Last week #1)

- They only had 1 game this past week but it was against Cooper and they handled them pretty well winning 4-0.

  • 3 games this week (South Oldham, Ryle & Mercy McAuley (OH)

2. HIGHLANDS 1-0 (Last week #2)

- Like Notre Dame they had only 1 game this past week in a lightning shortened one at that but going down 1-0, came back with 4 unanswered to win 4-1

  • Unfortunately they only have 1 game on their schedule and it’s not until Saturday down in L’ville vs Assumption who beat Ryle 1-0 on Sat.

3. DIXIE 2-1 (Last week #4)

- They came out of the gate with 3 games on their schedule winning 2 and losing 1 in PKs vs a strong Dunbar team.  This might ruffle some Simon Kenton fans but I just think Dixie deserved to leap frog the Pioneers in this weeks rankings.

  • 2 games this week (a strong Lex Cath team & Conner)

4. SIMON KENTON 1-1 (Last week #3)

- This demotion 1 spot was more Dixie then b/c SK lost to South Oldham.  I realize there is no shame in losing to S Oldham, they are a strong team.  Might see how strong they are when they play NDA tonight, South Oldham that is.

  • 3 games this week (Campbell County, Cooper & NCC), a solid week this week and Dixie stumbles might just flip them again next week.

5. COOPER 2-1 (Last week #5)

- I am staying put with Cooper at 5, their only loss was against NDA last week and demolished Ludlow and Owen Co.  Going to be able to figure out who they are this week when they go up against SK

  • 2 games this week (Grant County & Simon Kenton)

6. NCC 1-0 (Last week #7)

- Here is another flip flop from last week.  Unfortunately NCC only was able to play 1 game vs St Henry which they won 3-2 and really was never in doubt.  I sure wish their game against Ryle wasn’t cancelled b/c of heat, that would have been a good one.  Any news on a rescheduled date???

  • 3 games this week (Beechwood, TBD “All A Classic” & Simon Kenton)

7. Conner 1-0-2 (Last week #6)

- I dropped them because of their tying Bishop and Oldham County.  Not sold on those 2 teams being Top 10 “type” of opponents.  Is Conner still dusting off some cobwebs?  They will have the opportunity to show themselves this week with 3 games

  • 3 games this week (South Dearborn (IN), St Henry & Dixie)

8. Ryle 0-1 (Last week #8)

- Dang heat cancelled the game against NCC and then lose to Assumption only 1-0.

  • 2 games this week (Bishop & NDA)

9. CAMPBELL COUNTY 2-1 (Last week NR)

- Welcome to the party Camels!!!  They really showed well in the Fayette County Spectacular.  Winning 3-0 twice against Frederick Douglass and Tates Creek and then losing to a tough Lafayette team in their final game.  I still believe this team is on the rise plus they have one heck of a player in Ruby Dunleavy who could carry them far.  They will have a tough NKY schedule this week though so let’s see if they can stay in the Top 10

  • 3 games this week (Simon Kenton, Beechwood & St Henry)

10. HOLY CROSS 2-0 (Last week #9)

- So this is my thing with Holy Cross, I feel like they are that Mid Major College football team that doesn’t play a tough schedule and has this eye popping great record.  With that being said I am keeping them up in the Top 10, they better not fumble against the teams they should beat.  We might have to wait until Sept 1st when they play Beechwood to see if they belong up here.

  • only 1 game this week (Villa Madonna)

Dropped out:

BEECHWOOD 1-1:  Giving up 4 goals to Highlands in a matter of 22 minutes AND the strong week Campbell County had is the main reason Beechwood left the Top 10.  They will have a chance to redeem themselves this week though going against NCC and Campbell County.  Do well and maybe you can get back in.

We have a full slate of games TONIGHT, with all Top 10 teams playing except Highlands and Dixie.  The 2 big matchups that I am looking forward to will be NDA traveling to South Oldham.  Can South Oldham knock off another Top 5 NKY team like they did with #4 Simon Kenton last week?  The other big matchup is #4 Simon Kenton traveling to #9 Campbell County.  Will Campbell County protect their house after joining the Top 10?

The undercard matchups that are interesting will be Beechwood and Bishop Brossart that could try to make the case to join the Top 10 with wins tonight against #6 NCC for Beechwood and #8 Ryle for Bishop Brossart.

Here is the list of games:

#1 NDA @ South Oldham, 7:45pm

#4 Simon Kenton @ #9 Campbell County, 7:30pm

#5 Cooper @ Grant County, 7:30pm

#6 NCC vs Beechwood, 7pm

#7 Conner @ South Dearborn (IN), 6pm

#8 Ryle @ Bishop Brossart, 7:30pm

#10 Holy Cross vs Villa Madonna, 5pm

Good luck!

Looking forward to the Pandas at S. Oldham game.  S. Oldham has scored 11 goals in 2 games vs. West Jess and Simon Kenton.  Should be an interesting matchup.

NDA took care of business 3-0.  Ruthsatz had 2 goals, Spivey with the the 3rd.  Only two things disappointed in this game, a lightning delay and the officiating.  South Oldham is a very good team with legitimate offensive talent.  I heard one striker is committed to Louisville, so expect they will score a lot this year.  The Panda back line and midfield are both very good, and anticipate every pass.  Hopefully the Pandas came out healthy.  Their coaching staff and fans were not at all happy with the officiating of this one.

Here is a run down of all the action last night:

As Big Red stated NDA beat South Oldham 3-0

Then you had the other big matchup I was looking forward too, Campbell County made a NKY statement of relevance.  They put 3 on the scoreboard in the first 70 minutes before Simon Kenton was able to sneak 2 in in the final 20 to make the score look close.  My gut told me in PreSeason that Campbell County might be a team on the rise and I think this solidifies it!  They are going to move on up the ladder as long as they take care of 2 winnable games later this week against Beechwood and St. Henry.

Cooper beat up on poor Grant County 10-0.

NCC squeezed out a close one against Beechwood 2-1

Conner traveled over to the Hoosier land and won 2-0 against South Dearborn.

Ryle bounced back after a tough loss on Saturday to beat Bishop Brossart 3-0.

Then you have Holy Cross who like I stated in my last post couldn’t afford losing to a team not in the Top 10 and what do they do but lose to Villa Madonna 0-1.  See you later Holy Cross….Maybe you can redeem yourself when you play Campbell County on Sep 8th.

Enjoy the day off NKY, we will be back with another full slate of game on Weds.

That Holy Cross result is SHOCKING!!!  They have some very nice pieces, some terrific athletes that will make big impacts on the hard-wood this winter, I can't believe they'd drop a 0-1 result to Villa.  Wow.

Villa got a quick score with a ball that shot through the back of the Indian defense and they ran it down and scored 2 minutes into the game.  The rest of the game Villa packed in the defense putting four across the back line with another 2 maybe three sitting back on defense.  The Indians moved the ball well and in my opinion had a much better technical game, but were a bit tentative to take the longer shots and couldn't put the ball in the back of the net with closer shots with so many defenders packed in.  Villa's team has a core of seniors that Coach Rice has had since they were little and then all went to Villa together where they have played together since 7th grade.  They played well as a team.  Holy Cross has a nice set of girls with 5-6 new varsity starters this year and only one senior on the team  They started 1 senior, 6 juniors, 3 sophomores and 1 freshman with several younger girls subbing. They should get better as the season progresses.

Once again we have a great night of soccer to look forward to tonight.  Some big matchups here in NKY and then we have a great NKY representative (Dixie) carrying our NKY flag down to Lex to take on the defending State Runner Up last year Lex Cath.

Here is the run down on games:

#1 NDA vs #8 Ryle - 7pm

  • Don’t think NDA will lose this one but I am wondering when someone is finally going to SCORE a goal.  NDA has 2 clean sheets to go with their 2 wins, very impressive!

#3 Dixie @ Lex Cath - 7:30pm

  • With the season so young it is interesting we already have a like opponent for these 2 with Henry Clay.  Dixie beat Henry Clay 5-2 last week & Lex Cath beat Henry Clay 1-0 last night….should be a good one

#4 Simon Kenton @ #5 Cooper - 7:45pm

  • Can Simon Kenton stop the bleeding, 2 straight losses can’t feel good in that strong program.  Cooper blowing out weaker competition and has the lone lose against NDA.  This will be a good test where Cooper stands.

#6 NCC vs Villa - 6pm

  • Can Villa upset another Top 10 team tonight in the All “A”?

#7 Conner @ St Henry - 7:30pm

  • St Henry looking for that first win in the season and try to strengthen their resume.  I see this as a winnable game for St Henry.

#9 Campbell County vs Beechwood - 7:30pm

  • Beechwood trying to right their ship after 2 loses to Highlands and NCC and dropping out of the Top 10 also b/c of their opponent tonight in Campbell County having a strong beginning of the year.

Good luck to all!

Thanks @rjal, good info.  I'm a big fan of what is going on right now at Holy Cross, especially on the girls' side.  I like the soccer team (obviously, by my above post), and I LOVE what Ted Arlinghaus is doing with his program.  They could be good this year, and then scary the next couple of years.  Lot to be excited about down in Latonia.

RECAP FROM LAST NIGHT:

NDA does it again with another clean sheet win.  Ryle tried their best holding NDA scoreless in the 1st half but finally broke down and gave up 2 late goals to lose 2-0.

Dixie almost got it done in Lex.  They had a 2-1 lead with just over 20 minutes left in the game and unfortunately gave up 2 late goals to go down in defeat 3-2.

Cooper wins for the very FIRST TIME IN PROGRAM HISTORY over Simon Kenton, 1-0!  Simon Kenton drops to 1-3 on the season….

NCC wins the Regional All A Classic beating Villa 1-0, maybe Villa isn’t to shabby.  Might have written off Holy Cross prematurely from losing to them earlier in the week.

Conner held on barely to get the draw against St. Henry after going up 2-0.  Thought St. Henry could get the elusive Win that they are looking for but not last night.

Campbell County and Beechwood trade blows all night long and finish with a 3-3 tie.

Another night off for the NKY teams tonight.

Congrats to Scott Hughes and the Lady Jags on their 1st win over the Pioneers.

The NDA Ryle game last night was definitely a battle.  I had to leave after the first half, but it was fun to watch.  The Ryle goalie did a great job and has an amazing boot.  Both schools had enthusiastic students sections cheering.  It was so nice to see after last year.

Agree, Ryle NDA was a fun atmosphere.  Ryle defended very well and frustrated the panda attack.  I heard it was the first "night game" with their new lights ever hosted at NDA.  Good game and cool night.

That is true...first "night" game. Lights were installed at the end of last school year. Very cool!!!

Real quick recap on the only game of the night in the Top 10:

Campbell Country rolled over to St Henry and beat them in a fast paced up and down the field 4-2 win.

Now onto a big Saturday!!!!

Mercy (OH) comes over to KY to play #! NDA - 3pm

  • I ask once again can someone score on NDA????

#2 Highlands drives down to Louisville to play Assumption - 11:30am

  • OK a lot of question marks still hang over Highlands team, will we get some answers on Saturday.  Assumption knocked Ryle just last Saturday 1-0, can they beat another NKY team?

#3 Dixie at #7 Conner - 5:30

  • I see Dixie bringing out the guns to redeem their lose against Lex Cath earlier in the week.  Watch out Conner, this could be a long day for you.

#4 Simon Kenton at #6 NCC - 11:30am

  • If NCC can pull off the victory I see them stealing Simon Kenton’s #4 ranking on Monday morning…
