Dixie 67 St. Henry 61 (34th District Championship)

Featured Replies

Final from Lloyd, per James Weber’s tweet.

Boy this really makes this interesting.  St Henry could end up with a CovCath or Highlands 1st round matchup.  Not what they or either of those 2 teams would have wanted.  Where does this put Dixie as far as chance of winning the region?  I have not seen them play.

It’ll be an interesting tournament.  CCH is young and talented.  The other favorites are talented with senior leadership.  Dixie certainly has my attention.

And what a game it was!!!

The Red Colonels of Dixie Heights have had an incredible season, but the one thing that eluded them was a signature win over a Top 4 team, and when it really mattered the most they finally prevailed.

From the start of this battle you just knew that it was anybody’s game that could go either way, with much of the game it did just that.

The 1st quarter was evenly matched, but the Red Colonels showed a bit more balance in the scoring, and Billy Wogenstahl for Dixie established himself early as an inside threat. Teeten and Vieth were both big for the Crusaders doing most of the scoring in the first quarter.

At the end of 1 the score was St. Henry 18 Dixie Heights 17

In the 2nd period the Crusaders were just off of their game, they’re energy wasn’t quite there, and their shots weren’t dropping. On the other hand Dixe was playing like a championship team, owning the boards, making their shots, and point guard jr. Jay Flynn was lights out connecting on 4 or his 5 3’s in the first half. They move the ball so well, and are so quick in transition.

At the Half Dixie was up by 13 with the score 40-27.

At the beginning of the 3rd quarter the Colonels extended that lead to 15 when it was 44-29, but then the Crusaders went on a 15-0 run tying the game at 44. Finally Dixie stopped the bleeding and both teams continued to trade baskets until Dixie managed once again in the 4th quarter a 7 point lead when it was 61-54, but the Cru weren’t going to go away and made back-to-back plays that also included a steal and got it back to 3, 61-58 with about 2:30 to play.

The Colonels stayed the course and didn’t fold, and continued to make their free throws, both Summe and Flynn hitting 6-6 down the stretch. 2 for Summe, 4 for Flynn who ended the with 21 points.

Any of the starting 5 for Dixe are capable of taking the scoring load on any given night, and while you still got great contributions from Summe, Snelling, Geraci, and Landers, tonight’s game was led by Flynn and Wogenstahl.

In a season that had the St. Henry Crusaders win just about every big game they were in, your 34th District Champs are the Dixie Heights Colonels.

There are big implications in this victory for Dixie for now they’ll either face Ryle, Newport, or Holy Cross in the first round rather than CovCath, Highlands, or Conner, and that’s a big deal if you’re hoping to make it into the semi-finals.

At the end of 1 it was St. Henry up 18-17

Halftime Dixie 40-27

After 3 St. Henry 54-51

Final: Dixie 67-61

Billy Wogenstahl for the Colonels was the tournament MVP

Joining him from Dixie on the all tourney team were Ian Snelling and Keirnan Geraci

For the Crusaders it was Wyatt Vieth, and Cody Teeten.

Congratulations to these guys as it was well deserved.

A little disappointed that Jay Flynn was slighted here. 21 points in this huge win should be a no doubter.

Thanks for the great recap, as always, @B-Ball-fan. That was a heck of a game and is what makes tournament basketball so much fun.

My pleasure
