Senator's Stroke May Tip the Scales in the Senate!

Featured Replies

Just had a thought - if he is incapacitated, would that automatically move him into the top 10% of the Senate, in terms of intellectual prowess?

I think it would...I wonder who controls that top 10%? Democrats or Republicans?

I wish they would adjust things and have special elections for open seats, just like the House.

If South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson should have to resign, or dies, it could cost the Democrats control of the Senate - while elevating Kentucky Republican Mitch McConnell to the majority leadership position that slipped from him on Election Day.

Northern Kentucky leaders wished Johnson the best but did say that McConnell's role as potential majority leader would benefit the state and the region.

"I wish Sen. Johnson a full and speedy recovery," Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce President Steve Stevens said. "But in the event he is unable to return, Kentucky would be in a better position with Sen. McConnell in leadership."

Steven said "big-ticket items," such as the $1 billion replacement of the Brent Spence Bridge and the $40 million expansion of Williamstown Lake in Grant and Pendleton counties, "would be given much stronger consideration."

"Leadership positions are a factor when Congress determines how money is spent," he said.

A specialist familiar with Johnson's problem - congenital arteriovenous malformation (AVM) - said most people who suffer it survive but with some disability.

"The size of the hemorrhage will determine how disabled they are," Dr. Keith Siller, medical director of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Center at New York University Medical Center, said Thursday. He is not treating Johnson.

Johnson, a two-term Democrat, was diagnosed with AVM after he fell ill with stroke-like symptoms Wednesday. He had trouble talking during a conference call with reporters. Doctors operated on him during the night.

I've never liked having the Governor fill a vacant seat. It just doesn't seem right to have a seat lost like that. If the people elected a democrat I feel that the seat should be filled by a democrat. Let's hope this is all a mute point anyway and he recovers.

Could it be the voters didn't vote for a party but for the best individual?

Every voter is not hung up on the party line as much as folks think.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure but do you think the majority of the voters ignored party affiliation? Do you think the Governor would pick the best individual or the best (maybe) Republican?

So, is Mr. Smith Going to Washington?

I, I, I sure, sure, sure hope so, so, so. :thumb:

Best I could do with Jimmie Stewart on a message board. :D

So, is Mr. Smith Going to Washington?

Jefferson Smith: [His voice very hoarse] Just get up off the ground, that's all I ask. Get up there with that lady that's up on top of this Capitol dome, that lady that stands for liberty. Take a look at this country through her eyes if you really want to see something. And you won't just see scenery; you'll see the whole parade of what Man's carved out for himself, after centuries of fighting. Fighting for something better than just jungle law, fighting so's he can stand on his own two feet, free and decent, like he was created, no matter what his race, color, or creed. That's what you'd see. There's no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties. And, uh, if that's what the grownups have done with this world that was given to them, then we'd better get those boys' camps started fast and see what the kids can do. And it's not too late, because this country is bigger than the Taylors, or you, or me, or anything else. Great principles don't get lost once they come to light. They're right here; you just have to see them again!
