I said earlier in the year that NCC would beat Beechwood this year. However, I am surprised to see they still won even without Jefferson playing. When I heard Jefferson wasn't playing, I wasn't sure if they would pull it off.

Unfortunately the early season mistakes were back tonight for Beechwood.

 

1. Beechwood drives the ball 74 yards on their opening drive then fumbles at the 2 yard line.

 

2. Tigers second drive is stopped by an interception of a screen pass.

 

3. Tigers stop New Cath to force a punt but get a penalty for pushing down on the tackled player gives New Cath their first first down of the game.

 

4. New Cath gets the ball with 2 minutes left in the half trailing 7-0. Beechwood plays prevent defense, gives up New Cath's first legitimate first down of the half. Then on the last play of the half Beechwood is called for defensive holding, which puts New Cath in field goal range. They get an extra play with no time due to the penalty and kick a 40 yard field goal.

 

I don't know the exact totals but my guess is the yardage totals before New Caths' last drive against prevent defense were Beechwood 175 yards and New Cath 10. To that point New Cath's only first down in the half was the one they got by penalty.

 

5. Beechwood has the ball at the 50 leading 14-10 with less than 4 minutes to go and a chance to run out the clock. The Tigers pick up a couple first downs then miss a 32 yard field goal.

 

5. Beechwood playing prevent defense and New Cath tries basically a jump ball Hail Mary - and completes it at the 2 yard line with 33 seconds to go.

 

Those were the biggest mistakes. I cannot remember a Beechwood loss where the Tigers controlled a game as much as this one and lost it. New Cath's running backs probably had less than 20 yards rushing on the night.

 

Give New Cath credit for being well coached on defense and stopping some plays that had worked well for Beechwood throughout the season. Give credit to New Cath's wide outs for winning 3 or 4 jump ball passes that were the bulk of New Cath's offense on the night. New Cath was able to make a couple key plays to get the win.

 

Good luck to both teams in the playoffs!

If they played next week Jefferson would play and it would change things. Turnovers and penalties are part of the game. The teams to me appear to be pretty equal.

 

I agree Jefferson would help New Cath and even things up. He was in a boot tonight. Is he going to play next week?

This game reminded of the scrimmage against Cooper. Beechwood's defense shut them down except they made some big plays to a wide out against our corners. Beechwood's offense is better now than it was against Cooper.

I’m not a state champion Head Coach, nor will I ever been, but 4th down with a minute and some change and BW decides to kick the Field Goal deep in NCC territory. To me you go for it on 4th. Your worst possible outcome is what? You don’t get it, they get the ball exactly where they would if you miss. I can understand a fumble or interception but the odds of that are slim. Think that call was a deciding point for this game.

 

If he makes the field goal and that same last drive happens, you go to overtime. Beechwood's kicker made a 45 yarder last week. He had more field goals than any kicker in 2A coming into the game and was #4 in the entire state in field goals made. The tough thing on that kick was the ball was all the way over to the far right hash after the run on the previous play. That made it a more difficult angle.

Absolutely correct. I said the same thing about the hash and the difficulty of kick when it was happening. I’ve also watched him hit them from much farther. But again I’d have to say you go for it. It was like a 4th and 6 maybe 7. I’ve watch Cam hit out routes for those same 7 yards all year. Just my opinion, and still Go Tigers!

True. It was a tough decision and arguments could be made in favor of kicking or going for it. If they go for it and make it, the game is over because New Cath was out of time outs.

Even though BW did have success moving the ball most of the night they were also too conservative in my opinion. In the grand scheme of things it might work out better any way. Is BW now on the side of the bracket where they would face Somerset instead of Mayfield? I would rather face Somerset than Mayfield right now. Somerset seems a little banged up. Plus having already faced them, BW will know what things they need to correct from the first go around.

Exactly my point! I feel like every time I see we are in a 3rd and 6 situation, we are throwing an out route or a come back for a first down! But again I’m not the coach, and I know far less. Just ready for some play off football now!

There are no brackets in round 4. The KHSAA now uses their new RPI to seed teams in round 4. If Beechwood makes it to round 4 and all the top RPI teams keep winning, Beechwood will face the top seed in the state who will be Lexington Christian. They beat Paintsville 35-7 tonight.

 

If the top seeds hold in their districts, Beechwood will host Shelby Valley in round 3.

There are no brackets in round 4. The KHSAA now uses their new RPI to seed teams in round 4. If Beechwood makes it to round 4 and all the top RPI teams keep winning, Beechwood will face the top seed in the state who will be Lexington Christian. They beat Paintsville 35-7 tonight.

 

Beechwood has work to do to get there. Due to tonight's loss they will now have to travel to Breathitt County if they get to round 3.
