Reds Offseason Thread

He had a 4.28 ERA with a 1.413 WHIP in AAA. He's a fringe major league player.

All I was trying to point out was that his ERA last year was drastically ballooned because of two things...one bad appearance, and a limited number of appearances overall. That's all. And personally, I don't care what someone did at AAA (or any other level, for that matter). It's what they do when they're called up.

That may be. But when you've pitched 7 seasons in the minor leagues and put up a career 4.31 ERA with a 1.411 WHIP and only 7.5 K/9 it isn't going to translate well to the majors.

You used Robert Stephenson as an example but his minor league stats actually showed some promise. His biggest problem was control. He has a 3.77 ERA and 1.249 WHIP with 9.6 K/9 . Even that doesn't suggest any kind of an great rotation piece or high leverage reliever but much better than Romano who profiles as an injury fill in.

Again, I don't care what either of them did in the minors.

All I'm saying is that Stephenson (w/ 4 years in the majors) at age 26, has had a 2:1 K/BB ratio and a 1.465 WHIP, with 32 HR's given up in 198 innings pitched.

Romano's numbers (w/ 3 years in the majors) at age 25, has a similar 2:1 K/BB ratio and a 1.470 WHIP, with 36 HR's given up in 249 innings pitched.

Stephenson's career numbers benefited greatly from last year's results...81 K's/24 BB's, 1.036 WHIP. But, if you look at his ERA through his first three years (6.08, 4.68 and 9.26) and you wouldn't have been overwhelmed with confidence coming into his 4th year either. Look, I'm not saying Sal is absolutely 100% turn things around like Stephenson did. Won't be surprised if he doesn't. But, if he does, that won't surprise me either.

On a side note...how great is it to be only arguing about a middle reliever right now? Good grief, with the holes the Reds have had at other spots in previous years, middle relief would've been waaaaaaaaay down on the list of things discussed here. :lol2:

How their defense is going to look on days that Winker starts in the outfield is pretty concerning as well. Castellanos and Winker in the outfield with either Akiyama or Senzel in center and Moustakas at 2B does not have the makings of a good defensive team. Hopefully, they knock in more then they let in and don't demoralize the pitchers.

True. But we had Billy Hamilton in CF for how many years, and won how many games? With the way most batters approach the game today (swing for the fences), I'm not worried about someone being able to do a Superman dive to catch a ball in the gap. With the analytics on defensive positioning, all I want is for someone to be able to catch the balls they can get to, and on those that they can't, be able to hit the cutoff guy.
