Proof that a change was needed????

How does 6 state champions mean so much less than 4 state champions? Some less, yes, but enough to really complain about? If that is the case, why not have only 1 state champion, as there is in basketball? Now, I know that is ridiculous...but is 6 really so much worse than 4?

Yes.

It should mean something to make the playoffs. It won't under this new format. Ridiculous. If the KHSAA is going to do this, they should at least make so that only two teams make the playoffs from each district. You will now have first round games of teams like Danville taking on teams that are 0-10. Way to go KHSAA. You got everyone a little playoff experience. They just got drilled 70-0 with a running clock in the second half. Great way to end their hs football experience. It is one of the dumbest ideas i have ever heard for one of the smallest states in the union.

BTW, Danville will be in AA next year for the person that asked.

I was looking on the KHSAA at the State Final Rosters and saw that Danville had an enrollment of 556 students. Upon further research I found out that Raceland has an enrollment of 303, Paintsville has 253, and Paris has 200. Is this proof that a change was needed in the classification of schools? Other than 4A, what other classes would have to play schools double their size in the same class to win a state championship? For example if Paintsville were to play Danville in the State Championship you would have a school with an enrollment of 253 kids playing a school with 556 kids. That's more than double of Paintsville's enrollment.

In 4A, I know there are schools with 1100 students playing schools with

1800-2000 students.

I think this suggests that there was a "real" need to change/modify the classifications of 1A and 4A schools.

Beechwood was/is the smaller enrollment team when compared to Danville, NCC, Cov. Holy Cross, Mayfield, Somerset, Pikeville, Lex. Chrisitan, Murray, Bardstown with approx. 358 students. That might not be as drastic as the Paintsville vs Danville difference but is still a 200 student difference and obviously has had little effect from 1991-2006 on their success.

 Let's just go to one class and one championship.

You won't see anyone from Trinity complaining.

Well DUH!:D

CCH has an enrollment of only abot 500 students. But the are all boy. But they are still moving up to 5A. Also Beechwood is much smaller than most of the schools they play, but they are staying at 1A next year(i believe).

Great point! Beechwood has become a powerhouse in 1A despite their small enrollment. So they are proof that it "can" be done. However for whatever reason most schools the size of Beechwood don't have that many kids out for football, (Beechwood doesn't have to dress freshmen) which makes me believe that the majority of male students at Beechwood play football. Guru can correct me if I'm wrong on that. I have seen very few schools the size of Beechwood have as many kids playing football as Beechwood does. Beechwood started something great in the 80's and it kind of snowballed and now kids "want" to go there to play football and get a great education. That is not always the case for other small 1A schools. However, Beechwood has proved it can be done.

But for the sake of argument I still don't think it's fair for schools, including Beechwood, to have to play schools twice their size in their own class to win a state championship. (Even though Beechwood has proved it is possible) Other classes, except for 4A don't have to do it. Which is my main argument here. Why does the KHSAA make 1A and 4A schools have to play and defeat schools twice their size when they don't make 2A and 3A schools do the same thing? I guess this was the reasoning behind going to 6 classes.

Anyway, I will shut up on this topic. I just found it real interesting when I saw the number of students Danville had enrolled as compared to other 1A schools.

Something people sometimes forget the population base teams like Beechwood, NCC, and Lexington Christian have to draw from as opposed to schools like Russellville, Pineville, and Crittenden County.

I think that's a bigger factor than actual school enrollment.

Thank you Mr Scribe, I was about to begin my post regarding that topic. I read through all the previous posts and was amazed that this hadn't been brought up earlier.

Five classes would have solved the "problem" just as well ...

You are so correct. However, why is it that a 1A school is classified in Football but in baseball and basketball they have to compete with every school in Kentucky. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a classification system in place for all sports.

Absolutely YES!!

How many other states do not have a classification system in place for baseball?

they do now.

Also I dont think you can fair up 6a as far as numbers go, Trinity has 602 more boys in their school, than the 16th largest school in Kentucky.

Exactly....which means most teams refuse to whine and suck it up and play the game.

There is not a scenario to make it "fair" based on enrollment. I think the 6 classes do the best to address it without totally watering it down.

This is true; but I still don't like the new system of 6 classes. It doesn't really fix the problem. Now it's kind of dumb to name SIX STATE CHAMPIONS. It just doesn't sound right.

Sort of gives a whole new meaning to the song "We Are the Champions" eh.
