I attended the Best of the West 7v7 Tourney today and found if very well run with tourney management making great calls by cutting lunch short and cutting off the last pool game of the day (all 20 teams played 5 games) as temperatures escalated and players were clearly deteriorating.

 

I did not see all the teams I wanted to including Christian County and Logan County, but was fortunate to see most of the rest of the teams I wanted. I have a brief breakdown of them and their performance as follows:

 

Bowling Green (3-2) - Grade B - Many good pieces here but until the QB position is solidified the offense will struggle. Several key personnel not attending, but you play who you got. The 3 wins were all comfortable. The 2 losses the other team just overwhelmed them early and BG couldn't catch up. Plus Madisonville just played tremendous 7v7 today.

 

Madisonville (5-0) - Grade A+ - Their QB was outstanding. They have good possession receivers and a tall deep threat that has potential. Their coaching staff was the loudest out here and willed them to a few wins. They beat Corbin on the last play of the game to start them off hot!

 

Corbin (1-4) - Grade C - Just not their day. I don't know a lot about Corbin other than they had a Great 2018 season and I bet they lost a lot off that team. They just couldn't get it going in the games I watched of theirs.

 

Trigg County - Grade B - Their QB Jordan was impressive and they have some nice weapons just not enough of them. Had some bad luck in a game I watched. Then a very entertaining game vs Todd Co Central that got pretty feisty with Trigg coming out on top. They played hard all day.

 

Todd County Central - Grade B - They have a very solid QB and a good receiver but struggled on offense. But I like what I saw.

 

South Laurel (3-2) - Grade A - I didn't know anything about them before today and they really impressed me with the athletes I watched. This isn't Friday night football but don't sleep on this team as they looked really good to me!

 

McCracken County (3-2) - Grade B- - QB was pretty good and they have a real stud at wideout, but the defense didn't play well early and it cost them.

 

Hopkinsville (4-1) - Grade B+ - Javier Bland (QB) and company have athletes everywhere and overpowered a couple teams then got overpowered by Brentwood Academy.

Got to speak with Coach Clayton briefly after the first game today and he is always a great guy to speak with. This team will a tough out before its all said and done. I am disappointed I didn't get to see them play BG as the last pool game of the day was Hoptown vs BG. Oh well.

Terrific Tournament!

 

It saves me over 8 hours round trip compared to Dalton, Ga and was run just as well or maybe better than Dalton, while having to adhere to KYs heat index rules. The management continued to make great moves today by asking teams to begin games 5 or 10 minutes early and this helped get the tournament in on a VERY hot day.

 

Pearl Cohn (Nashville, TN and went to the State Finals last season) beat Hopkinsville 48-20 to win the first ever Best of the West 7v7 Tournament. PC was a very athletic, fast, and aggressive team and their QB was probably the best player I saw this weekend.

 

Concerning KY Teams, I observed the following:

 

Hopkinsville (6-3) - Grade: A - Tigers just keep battling! I really wish I could have seen the 34-32 win that knocked Logan County out! QB Bland played awfully well! Beat more teams than everyone but PC! Great weekend for Hopkinsville!

 

Bowling Green (5-3) - Grade: B+ - Purples take care of Creekwood TN early and then take on the vaunted Brentwood Academy A squad. After going down early again, Purples never give up and keep battling and finally take the lead on their last offensive possession (W16-15). Go to the final 4 and just lose to the eventual champs. But I saw players make big gains and start to get it for several young defensive guys! Good showing Purples!

 

Madisonville (5-1) - Grade: D - Probably had the best day of anyone on Friday. Was the only team to play 1 game on Saturday. Reportedly "pulled out" of the tournament after their first game today - a 27-24 loss to Brentwood Academy B Team. I honestly don't know what happened in that game, but lose a chance to overcome adversity and go to the Concellation Bracket and make a run. All I'll say is WOW! You are not going to win every game and need to teach how to make lemonade out of lemons.

 

Trigg County - Grade: B - Looked super beating Evansville Harrison in the first game today only to lose to Pearl Cohn and then face Harrison again and lose a spirited game next time around. Very positive weekend for the Wildcats.

 

Todd County Central - Grade: B - Lose to Brentwood Academy B in the first game and take it to NW Clarksville in game 2. Play Corbin to the wire in the Concellation Bracket and get clipped by 1 point 20-19. This team won't win every game, but they will battle you every game. Very positive weekend for TCC!

 

Corbin - Grade: B+ - After a subpar day yesterday, the Redhounds came out inspired and was stopped at the 1 while down 27-25 to Brentwood Academy A then Brentwood pulled away. Went to the Consellation Bracket and played really well beating TCC by 1 and Harrison and played Creekwood, TN for the Concellation Title, but I honestly don't know who came out on top of that game. Regardless, was impressed with Corbin's fire today. They didn't have that Friday and came back strong today. Good job!

 

McCracken County - Grade: B - McCracken came out hot today and beat Christian County 24-15 and looked good doing it. Played Pearl Cohn next and couldn't get it done, so they should have been done for the day, but they made lemonade out of lemons and picked up Madisonville's spot in the Concellation Bracket. They played a really feisty game against Creekwood TN and got behind early and just couldn't catch up. Good weekend!

 

South Laurel - Grade: B- - Just had a tough day. Played Final 4 Team Macon Co TN and lost 31 to 21. Then went to the Concellation Bracket in a game I watched vs Clarksville TN where they just couldn't get enough offense going until it was too late. But I was impressed with this team overall this weekend!

 

GREAT Weekend of 7v7 football! I hope they keep this going next year as it was a really good tournament. Pads go on on Monday and we get closer to scrimmages!

From following along on twitter, it sounds like this tournament was a smashing success in year one. Hope they can make this an annual affair.
