May 19, 20197 yr Author We just attended my daughter's Baccalaureate Services for Somerset High this afternoon and I got to wondering if most schools still had these or not.

May 19, 20197 yr Back in the day, Mason County and St. Patrick conducted baccalaureate services together. Don’t know if they still do or not.
May 19, 20197 yr Author What are Baccalaurette Services? Glad someone asked...:lol2: It's a religious service to honor the graduating class held in most cases at a local church or chapel. Seniors wear gowns (no caps) and any cords or honors they have attained. It is not mandatory but turnout is usually very very high.
May 19, 20197 yr Author All of the local schools in this county held individual services prior to their graduation, usually the Sunday evening prior.
May 20, 20197 yr I’m not aware of any that were held for my kids that all recently graduated here in Kenton County or for myself that graduated 31 years ago in a different state. I had no idea what they were and had never heard of such a service before this thread.
May 20, 20197 yr We had one in 2004 when I graduated from Boone County, with guest speaker David Akers. As an Eagles fan, I was pretty excited. Told him that I hoped they make the Super Bowl, which they did the next year.
May 20, 20197 yr Boone County H.S. continues to hold a Baccalaureate service. This year and in 2016 it was held at the Vineyard church. I believe also in the intervening years. In 2016, a teacher/staff member gave "the message" and did an excellent job. This year a staff person from the Vineyard gave "the message". Each of those years a student also gave a short message and tied it to Scripture. They happened to be siblings. As was said, this is a voluntary service and it seemed to be less well-attended this year, though the 2019 class is much smaller than was the 2016 class. For those who don't know what a Baccalaureate service looks like... The graduates file in wearing caps and gowns and are seated in center/front. No honors are displayed. The service then begins with singing worship songs (Christian). Three different readers of Scripture (Bible) are interspersed among other speakers. A faculty member gives an inspirational talk (not necessarily religious in nature), a student gives a talk, and then "the message" that has always been religious and Christian in my experience. The Principal gives the closing address. All of the speaking times are very brief (5 min) except the main religious address which was 12-15 min.
