3 of the best defensive lineman to ever wear the purple and gold.

Scotty Russell - Evarts. 1991 Mr. Football. He is remembered for breaking the all time rushing record in KY, but he was an outstanding LB as well. Plus, he was a good punter/kicker.

The conversation for QB begins and ends with Couch, but there were certainly some other great ones. Breathitt County alone had a couple of them - Kyle Moore and Justin Haddix. Riley Hall (Pulaski County), Ricky Bowling (South Laurel), and Zach Lewis (Clay County) all put up big numbers.

 

Quinton Baker (RB, Ashland) - Ashland's all time leading rusher. As dynamic and explosive a runner as I've ever seen in northeastern Kentucky.

 

Jeremy Sheffey (OL, Boyd County) - Three year starter at WVU and two time All Big East selection.

 

Philip Ratliff (OL, Lawrence County) - Two time FCS All-American at Marshall.

 

A couple of names that deserve mention are Quinton Henson (RB, Lynn Camp) and Bubby Lewis (RB, Fleming County). Admittedly I'm not super familiar with those guys, but they had stellar careers. Their names are not hard to find in the KHSAA record book.

 

Surely with all of their history, some more Pikeville names belong here? They had a lot of great players on those late 80's championship teams under Hillard Howard.

 

Good call on Branham, @ATLCat. He was a special player on a special team. How's this for a playoff run... destroy Pikeville, then handle Beechwood and Mayfield en route to a state title. And Branham was right at the forefront of it all as a driving force for Middlesboro. He and Kash would make for an intimidating inside linebacker duo. No clue what became of him after high school, though.

Just a couple of thoughts.

 

A lot of people might overlook him due to his prowess on the basketball court, but Lofton had all the tools on the football field as well. I think he's hands down one of the top WRs in EKY history. He and Dustin Grutza were a lethal pitch and catch combo.
