Are we OK with "old school" professors slapping students?

I got my knuckles slapped with the ruler, got my ear pulled, etc. and I didn't even go to Catholic school. That was in the classroom; lessons learned (it only happened a couple of times before I caught on that I was supposed to be paying attention.

 

I also wrestled in high school, and many was the time that I got my ears cuffed by the coach when trying to make a point. I grew up with the mindset that basketball was for sissies (my dad was also a wrestling coach, as well as a football coach); this is the sort of thing that confirms that theroy. And just when I thought that basketball was on its way to becoming a man's sport...

As a public school teacher who went to a public school and had his fanny paddled a few times, I have no doubt in my mind that when the paddle advertisement hanging on the wall behind the teacher's desk, there was a measure of respect and discipline that left the classroom.

 

And I fear at this point that it cannot be gotten back.

We're not talking about kids. We're talking about young adults. You're telling me that you're OK with an authority figure (coach, teacher, police officer, minister) slapping your 18 year old daughter?

I'll ask you the same question: You're OK with an authority figure (coach/professor/minister/police officer) slapping your 18 year old daughter to "get her attention?"

What we all seem to be missing is that Bobby once again showed that he was about to lose it with a kid over something as innocent as a kid looking down at the ground. Most rational adults would tell the kid in no uncertain terms to look them in the eye. The fact that Bobby resorted to a slap tells me that he is still unstable.

 

That should be the concern.

I have read the versions and even Knights. His do it my way style, rubs some the wrong way and rightfully so at times. I'll reserve my opinion, until I can see a video.

Anybody touches my face/head, its on like donkey kong, I cant stand to have someone slap me on the back of the head for flick my ear, I go into a mad rage, lose control, If Knight did that to me I would have gone to jail for breaking his hip

It was a forceful pop to the bottom of his chin, easily enough to cause him to bite his tounge pretty good, no one and i mean NO ONE strikes my head with any force without a knuckle sandwich in return:fight:

He took his hand, struck the player under/near his chin to get him to look at him while being talked too....should have been handled in another way but the player said the following..."It was nothing," Prince told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal after Monday night's game. "He was trying to teach me and I had my head down, so he raised my chin up. He was telling me to go out there and don't be afraid to make mistakes. He said I was being too hard on myself.

 

Coaching will bring out the best and worst in a person. Knight used a more aggressive method than some or most but it doesn't cause me great alarm. Being cussed at, downgraded, lectured, criticized or benched happens in college athletics and Knights tactics, may be stronger than most but if the player in question, along with his parents are okay....than non-issue for me.

Have you ever or do you, play intercollegiate athletics....things happen during playing and coaching, that everyone wishes they could take back. Just like being a fan and yelling/cursing an official from the stands. Not the best behavior and embarrassing, but also tempers can cause a person to over react.

I didn't say it was okay, shouldn't be tolerated or condoned but college/professional coaches are their to motivate, make you overachieve, instruct, teach and improve a player....Knight does it in a differing manner than some but there have been times, I would rather have been nudged under the chin, than to be called some of the "verbal" names I was, during my sports career.

 

As for your other comparisons, think of a head coach as an employer and the player is an "at will employee"....coaches make points continually, with gestures and language. Officers and Ministers are there to mandate compliance and coaches, often demand it....part of the difference.

Was Coach Knight wrong with the hit to the chin of his player. The kid says there was nothing wrong with it, and the Coach feels the same way.
