10th Region Basketball

 

2018-2019 Preview

 

1. Campbell County

The defending 10th Region Champions come in at 1st. To be the man, you gotta beat the man. The Camels lost two of last years best players in the region, Joel Day and Tanner Clos. However returning for the Camels is Drew Wilson (10.3) and last years leading scorer and rebounder Reid Jolly (18, 10).

 

2. George Rogers Clark

The Cardinals were the favorite pick to win last year when they were beat by Campbell County in the second round of region in overtime. The Cardinals have well spread out-scoring and rebounding, however losing Wil Philpot, 2nd leading scorer and rebounder will hurt. They return a core duo of Jordan Graham (11.7), Brennan Canada (13.1).

 

3. Scott

The 10th Region Runners Up return most players from last season and could assuredly be number one in anyone's rankings. They may make their way to that spot at some point during the season, due to their strong guard-play and heavy experience They return leading scorer and rebounder Trey Meister (14.7, 5.8), Chad Ohmer (14.3).

 

4. Pendleton County

Dontaie Allen, Kentucky commit, averaging 31.8 points and 11.4 rebounds, will be the star of the region to watch this year. Losing many key players, the return another starter Cody Sullivan (6.2), but other than that it will be up to last year's bench players to be this year's role players to take Pendleton County on a deep postseason run.

 

5. Harrison County

Harrison County only lost to Campbell County by 10 in last year's regional tournament, but to say they had an up and down season is an understatement. They have a good core of starters, led by Quenton Turley (16.8, 2.6) and Spencer Free (13.2, 4.5). They have the players to move up in the rankings. How much they will move up depends on if they play well at the right time.

 

6. Mason County

Under the new direction of former Augusta coach Brian Kirk, the Royals will see a different type of play than we've seen. They lost five players last year. However they return St. Pat transfers Chandler Black and Jake Swolsky. Their biggest return is senior Jaylen Lofton (11.4, 7.3). Mason County lacks size and struggles when changing to a completely different offensive system.

 

7. Bishop Brossart

Bishop Brossart is favorite to win the "All A" Classic this year. Their defense will give Robertson County a world of trouble in the first round, now being played at CCMS. They are led by seniors Ethan Eilerman (10.0, 3.7) and JD Schumacher (9.9, 4.6). Rebounding will be one of the problems for the Mustangs, without much size, and nobody last year getting more than 5 rebounds a game.

 

8. Montgomery County

Losing 4 players to graduation, they return 8 seniors, including last year's leading scorer Myron Ralls (14.2, 3.2) and Pahroh Davis (9.8, 7). They also return Austin E. (9.7) from Augusta.

 

9. Robertson County

The defending All 'A' Classic Champions lost heavy scorer and rebounder Mason Burden, but still retain a strong core of young players. With a tougher schedule ahead of them, the Black Devils only beat two teams with a winning record last year (Paris/Calvary) by a combined 10 points. They have tremendous potential to move up on the list, and can move up in their stronger schedule.

 

10. Paris

After losing 6 seniors in last year's come-from-behind loss to Scott in the 10th Region Tournament, Paris still returns a lot of speed and athleticism, most notably Travis Strings, who was the 2nd leading scorer with 11.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg.

 

11. Bourbon County

Bourbon County lost four players to graduation, notably Titus Ransom, but return Elijah Chenault who averaged 9.4 a game last year. They still have a lot of experience coming back with 6 seniors on the roster.

 

12. Bracken County

After last years 25 loss season, the Polar Bears return a core group of players. Guards Mason Tucker (9.5) and Jhace Cummins (4.5), and Tad Fisher (8.4, 5.5). They started playing well at the end of last year, ending St Pat’s season after a tip-in with 0.2 left to send it to overtime, and having GRC down to single digits in the 3rd.

 

13. Nicholas County

While losing many key players to graduation, Nicholas County still returns Morgan Planck (12.1, 4.1) and Brady Switzer (10.2, 2.4). They will lack size. However, Coach Botner must be confident in the future, for Nicholas County was the deciding vote to seed the 38th District.

 

14. Calvary Christian

Calvary will be led by new head coach Orlando Donaldson. It will up to the juniors Mason Rusch (26.7), Josh Morgan (13.2) and Cross Dugan (10.8), to help improve off of last years 19-12 record. Keep an eye out for Rusch, he may lead the region in scoring this year and contend with Allen point-wise.

 

15. Augusta

Under the new direction of Roger Newton, the Panthers return big man Stephen Cordle (10, 7.2) and Preston Philpot (11.9, 2.7). They lose guards Ripato, Mains, and Eichenberger, and will have trouble handling the ball. Size they do have however, especially with "Big Steve" Cordle in the post.

 

16. Saint Patrick

The Saints return no starters, losing many players to graduation, in addition to Swolsky and Black, who have transferred to Mason County. Returners off the bench include Pat McKay (6.6), and Paul Muehlbauer (2.6). Expect a lot of growing pains from the very, very young Saints.

 

17. Silver Grove

Only losing one player to graduation, the Big Trains return leading scorer Elian Turcios (19.8) and Christian Kersey (10.3).

 

Preseason Player Rankings

 

1. Dontaie Allen - Pendelton County

The now Kentucky commit said he was glad to get the college decision out of the way before the season. The 6'7 candidate for Mr. Basketball averaged 32 ppg along with 11 rebounds. With 60% shooting from the floor last year, Dontaie is sure to increase his 2,697 career points to break Pendleton County and 10th Region records.

 

2. Reid Jolly - Campbell County

At 6'5, 230, Jolly is easily the top post player in the region. Averaging 18 and 10 last year, Jolly also has experience of playing in Rupp Arena and is determined to return.

 

3. Jordan Graham - George Rogers Clark

Graham averaged 12 and 3 last year, but expect him to average 18 and 8 plus this year. A long athletic guard that can score from anywhere on the floor.

 

4. Trey Meister - Scott

Averaging 15 and 6 last year, his name isn't by coincidence. Shooting 40% from 3 last year, and 52% from everywhere else makes him one of the best shooters in the region.

 

5. Brennan Canada - George Rogers Clark

The other half of GRC's offense, the 6'7 senior averaged 13 and 7 last year, and I believe will have almost mirror stats to teammate Graham.

 

6. Chad Ohmer - Scott

The six foot "guard" was one of Scott's most important players last season, not only because of his 14 ppg, but because of his added grit, strength and size to Scott's guard heavy roster.

 

7. Drew Wilson - Campbell County

Averaging 10 and 2 last year, Drew will take over the main point guard role for the Camels looking to get back to Rupp.

 

8. Quenton Turley - Harrison County

Averaging 17 and 3 last year, Turley has great potential to be a breakout star for Harrison County, competing for a 38th District and 10th Region Title.

 

9. Travis Strings - Paris

With 12 and 5 last year, the quick and athletic Strings will be the main source of offense for the Greyhounds, keeping them in close contention for the All A title.

 

10. Myron Ralls - Montgomery County

Ralls returns as the Indians' best performer form last year with 14 and 3, a great athletic guard, but with a bad shooting year percentage wise last season.

Made some last minute changes to this as soon as I uploaded it! 10th Region is always hard to rank.

I am a huge fan of Brian Kirk, the person and the coach, and I firmly believe he will get Mason County rolling sooner rather than later.

I think this is the year Coach Cook and the Cards get it done. I've enjoyed watching Jordan Graham grow as a player. With that said, I could see CC and Scott winning as well. Their district has owned the Region as of late.

Dontaie Allen is the obvious beat player! And I love watching Jolly play - he is an all around athlete!

 

The only thing I would challenge is that Brossart is a favorite to win the All A. They may be the best All A in the 10th but that is as far as i would go (unless you are only referring to them winning the 10th)

Northern Kentucky will continue to dominate the 10th region this year and in the foreseeable future. George Rogers Clark has the talent but will continue to be posers come season's end(they've let me down the past several years)

BREAKING: The Big Trains making big moves: Silver Grove lands DI West Virginia commit Spencer Macke.

I believe GRC will be better than some think this year. Transfer Lincoln Bush from F. Douglas, at 6'7 and a Jr. should help the cards. A long and athletic player. Remember the name of Jerrod Wellman. He will have a breakout year as a Sophomore. He came off the bench last year and is a shooter.

GRC will have a very good bench and have depth. Really looking forward to the journey they will take us fans on this year.

Thanks for the info.Can you tell us more about the players at Robertson Co. I am not real familiar with them. I don't care if they are transfers or not just want to know who to watch for. None was mentioned in the preview. Thanks.

Can’t provide many numbers. Freshman big man Justin Becker probably has the most potential. Can play all over the floor. Last years transfer from Mason Co, Sebastian Dixon, was their 2nd or 3rd leading scorer. Brandon Dice, transfer from Bracken Co last season hit the game winning shot for the All A Championship last season. Both should again be big contributors. They have another transfer from Bracken Co this season and one from Spain also.

Becker, his older brother Ross, Eli Dotson, Alex Schalch, who is another big guy in the middle, will all be very solid. These kids have had a lot of success starting in middle school.
