LA Rams Success

Featured Replies

The Rams are taking a really unique approach to building their team and it’s working. QB on a rookie contract freeing up cap space to sign a ton of big time free agents and sign Donald and Gurley to big contracts. The Rams look like the best team in football right now. Is this model repeatable? How sustainable is it? It’s basically the opposite of the Patriots model: pay the QB, everyone else is expendable. Just an interesting scenario I heard on Pat McAfees podcast today.

I don't know.

At some point Superstars need to get paid.

I don't know.

The point is basically bring in all the big time free agents you can. You can afford to pay them all because your QB is on a rookie contract. In this case the QB is somewhat expendable. Whenever that QBs contract comes up, you just draft another young QB or bring in a veteran like Fitzpatrick or Hasselback (the example they used). The Rams tried to trade for Khalil Mack and were going to sign him to a 2 year contract and trade him after the first year. I think it’s a really interesting idea.

It gives them a very small window.

But is that window worth it if you go all in to win a super bowl? The Patriots model is impossible to replicate.

I feel like the Rams quick success is somewhat refreshing to me. I enjoy watching them when I can.

They are a really fun team to watch. They play a fun brand of football.

Sure it's worth it....If you win the SB, which isn't likely.

The Rams are a really good football team. They are 100% going to be in contention for it. I’m not saying they’ll win, but they’ll have a say in it for sure. Look what other teams have done after paying the QB. The Seahawks, Colts, Lions, Ravens, and even the Packers have been unable to have the success they should after having to pay the QB. They don’t have the ability to sign big free agents or resign their own talent. Then you look at teams like LA, Philly, and Jacksonville who have either a young QB on a rookie contract or just an average QB and it allows them to resign key players and bring in free agents.

That after they had to pay them haven’t been able to get back...

This is the same model Seattle used to build their squad, so it’s not particularly unique.

It’ll be unique if they actually do cut Goff loose after his rookie deal, which I doubt happens.

I started to read your post and thought it sounded like the PMS 2.0 show from today. Sure enough it was.

Not sure if it is sustainable long-term but it sure seems to be working for them now.

This is kinda the same thing that the Rams did building the Greatest Show on Turf. They were able to keep Bruce, Faulk, Holt and others back then because they caught lightning in a bottle with Warner.

It was just a shame that Vermeil cashed in after one year and retired.

It will be interesting to see how Rams and Eagles both fair after these rookie QB contracts expire.
