I think we're looking at it differently. You're looking at it from the NCAA's perspective (I think).

 

I'm looking at it from the networks that are bidding on the contract and showing the games. They want the huge ratings generators. And if you don't think they have influence on the committee's decision, well...

Who did the networks force on the committee, that didn't deserve to be there?

Easy to predict those teams will be chosen when historically they are the best teams in the country. It's not a conspiracy by the committee, those teams are just better historically.

 

Right, but when you had a scenario like in 2014 when the #4 spot came down to Ohio State or TCU, no one thought TCU really had a fighter's chance and it had nothing to do with resume. Now Ohio State proved they were the right choice, but let's not pretend name recognition and rating don't play a massive role in the selection.

The 4th spot in the playoff comes down to 1 loss Kentucky or say 1 loss Georgia, or even Notre Dame. Do you think Kentucky (who would own a win over Georgia) has even the slightest chance of being chosen?

TCU had a very weak resume that year and it kept them out. Doesn't Ohio State get the subconscious edge in the minds of most people sure they do...I don't think Fox, CBS or ESPN called committee and said give them and edge. The best teams already have rightfully or not, earned that bias.

 

I think Kentucky would get in over Georgia, as long as they weren't curb stomped in the SEC title game. Notre Dame would have that name recognition edge on UK of course and would probably the edge over the Cats. I still don't think the committee cares about TV ratings or what the networks think.

Same would happen if it was 8 teams, 16 teams or even 32...if it comes down to equal resumes between say Kentucky and Notre Dame, the historical significance of Notre Dame will almost always give them and edge.

 

That said, I still don't see where when the teams were announced there was an overwhelmingly deserving team that got left out.

16 teams or more and we get a much better chance at seeing who the pretenders are and who the best is. As of now, it's still just the equivalent of an invitational to me.

That’s assuming football and other sports have the same goal. If you want to compare the playoff to the NCAA tournament, I’ll see myself out because that’s not a debate.

I certainly don't think OSU belonged in the 2017 playoff.

 

There were undefeated Alabama and 3 1-loss Power 5 teams (Clemson, Ohio State and Washington). Some Ohio State didn't deserve to be in based on how bad they got beat in the playoffs. You can't reseed after the playoffs are over, you just the info you had at the end of the season to pick them.

 

Ohio St had a better resume than 2 loss Penn St. even though Penn State beat them late, those two losses killed Penn State's chances that season.

And Ohio State had a dominant road win over the Big 12 Champ. People forget Ohio State was the 3 seed that year. The committee debated Washington/ Penn State.
