If you play FROSH football at school A then go to School B, you are eligible immediately since you never played a varsity sport at School A. You are correct on the rule regarding 4 years of eligibility from the time you are promoted from the 8th grade. AS LONG AS there is a true change of residence.

March 14, 200719 yr Is it different for different sports???? In football once your in the 9th grade then you are a varsity player no matter if you get on the field or not. From the time you leave 8th grade you then have 4 years of playing time. Some with court juctions have gotton 1 more. If you transfer after leaving 8th grade doesn't the tranfer rule apply? Or is it just in football? CSHS is right about not needing to have a permanent bona fide change of residence if you have not participated on the varsity level at the sending school. And by participation, I mean actually get into a varsity game in any sport. If as a freshman you participated in a varsity game in soccer and then transferred, you are ineligible to participate in any sports for a year unless you qualify under one of the exceptions to By Law 6, one of those exceptions being the most commonly used permanent bona fide change of residence exception. Being on the roster or on the varsity team is not the issue. Its whether the kid actually got into a varsity game (even for as little as one play) that determines whether there was participation. And no the rule is not different for different sports. Its all the same. The only exception to what I just said is that if a 7th or 8th grader participated in varsity sports, that participation does not count as "participation" under the transfer rule. That exception of course will be moot if Proposal 2, the territory/feeder school rule, is approved by the State Board of Education at its April meeting.
February 20, 201412 yr Bump! For anyone thinking of transferring. Heard of one tonight. Well he was thinking about it! Let's hope the kid isn't that unwise to make such a horrible decision and waste a year of eligibility. I think he now may of changed his mind once he has some facts.

Not because he wasn't happy at his current school. I think maybe he has changed his tone once he found out that he would throw an entire year away because he played a Varsity sport this past year. In this case a move of address isn't applicable.
