I guess I meant did the storms last for a long time? Why did they end the games instead of waiting out the storms?

 

There was still rain and occasional lightning to be seen up until at least 11:30pm or so. Tack on another 30 minute delay for every flash of lightning in the area. Calling it was really the only option.

I thought it had to be a half but coach Rash said it was official 28-0 so not sure.

 

The KHSAA has it listed as 28-0.

I was surprised how much better Beechwood looked than Somerset.. This would of been a running clock very likely before half..

Beechwood had three offensive possessions in the game and scored on all three.

When the officials stopped the game, I had not seen any lightning. I was wondering why they stopped play. Apparently there was lightning somewhere far off in the distance that one of the officials must have seen. After about 45 minutes, the lightning became more regular and was clearly getting closer, slowly but surely.

There never was much rain. It was all about the lightning. There was crazy strong lightning nearby when the game was called. They would not have been able to start this game back up till after 11 pm so it was called.

 

I expected a more competitive game from Somerset. They look like a solid team but Beechwood was in control and doing what they wanted the entire game. Somerset became unglued as the score mounted and had to call one timeout just to try and get reorganized. There was no need to continue the game or try and replay it.

Radio guys mentioned that they saw lightning in the distance 5 to 10 minutes before the game was stopped.

It was a strange weather situation. I did not see the lightning when the game was stopped. There was very little, sporadic lightning way off in the distance for the next 45 minutes or so. I never heard thunder till much later in the evening. Some of the officials and others stood on the field till probably 1 1/2 hours after play was stopped with no apparent concern about lightning. Safety first though. Looking back, they could have finished the first half because the storm moved so slow and the lightning was clearly so infrequent and far away, but you can't take the risk. Plus the outcome of this game was already decided at the point they stopped it.

I wouldn’t call the lightening infrequent at first. It was consistent and frequent. If you looked out over the parking lot from the field, it was lightening like crazy when they stopped it. The direction it was coming in, you really couldn’t see it at first unless you were on top of the field house. My son pointed it out, and I told him it was probably a camera flash. Then it happened again seconds later, and I thought it was the flicker of the parking lot lights coming on. Then the 3rd time, I saw it, and shortly after they stopped play. It was slow to move in though.

 

As for the game, Somerset just looked out of sync. They struggled with personnel and lining up properly. QB was constantly yelling at receivers trying to get them setup properly. Defensively, they let receivers run free multiple times.
