Life after AJ, what does Covington Catholic need out of his replacement at QB?

Featured Replies

The Colonels are coming off from one of their best seasons in history and Miami, OH commit AJ Mayer played a huge role in their undefeated, 5A championship season. So the question is somewhat simple, what do the Colonels need out of AJ's replacement to make another run at the 5A title?

Mayer was a three year starter at quarterback for the Colonels and put up some amazing numbers even as a sophomore, accounting for 2,600 yards of total offense, 24 touchdowns, while throwing 12 interceptions. His numbers progressively became more efficient however. During his senior campaign he amassed over 2,700 yards, added 43 touchdowns while only throwing 3 interceptions and finished the season with a completion average just over 50%

While he was the catalyst and essentially the brain behind the perfect season Covington Catholic had last season, they still look to be the favorite to win class 5A this season. The Colonels have a couple of good options to replace AJ this season, but it is still unclear which option the coaches will choose. Will it be the senior Tyler Reusch or will they toss sophomore Caleb Jacob right into the fire like they did AJ Mayer? Both quarterbacks have their pro's and cons, with Jacob seemingly having the most upside going forward. Regardless of who wins AJ's starting position, they will have plenty of talent to work with.

So what does Covington Catholic need this season out of their new quarterback to make another run at the state championship? Just someone to manage the show, or another heady playmaker like Mayer?

I’ll get back to you with the answer in about 6 hours

Any thoughts prior to this evenings game? I'd like to hear what some think prior to seeing the results from tonight, then revisit this thread this evening after the game or tomorrow morning.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer, I'm just looking for opinions until some get to see the Colonels play.

If the new qb (whoever it may be) has half the composure and throwing ability of AJ the Colonels will be in for another great season.

Here is what the QB must do:

1. Hand the ball off to McGinness

2. Hit a 6'5 TE freak 3 to 4 times per game

3. Take the top off the defense with a streaking 6'3 WR freak downfield.

Just don't turn the ball over... let the above "dudes" do their thing.

Sounds so easy a caveman could do it.

Side note AJ is #10 and listed at 6'3 213 for the Redhawks and #71 6'4 280 pound Sam Murrer switched to Dline and #82 Kameron Butler is 6'3 255 pounds now.

I’m thinking the decision is pretty much made. The qb needs to be able to hit some passes in the flat and maybe throw 1 or 2 deep posts a game. Keep the turnovers to a minimum and the offense is set up to have a successful season.

Who do you think will be the starting qb tonight?

No reason to overthink things here...

I'm not overthinking, I'm on the same page as you. I really believe that the Colonels will have a great season regardless. I'm just curious what others think. Even with AJ graduating the Colonels are still #1 in the BGP poll for a reason, I'm just curious what the new qb needs to provide for another title run. You answered that question, I'm just curious what others think as well.

Sorry... I messed up that post... I was replying to NKYFBALLFAN's so easy a caveman could do it... but didn't quote his post when I replied.

Maybe 12 passes, complete more than half of them. Hit Mayer with a couple and throw a couple deep. Of course no turnovers is always desired. If the QB does that, I think CCH will be fine.

The Blueboys will roll again this season. They have so much talent coming back that if I were Coach E, the young soph gets the nod. Pretty much do what the guy before said. MaGinnis and the freak show at receivers will carry this team. Not to mention a great defense returning and an experienced kicking game. My Bluebirds, ehh, .500 year again, will play Blueboys tough but the Colonels way to talented.

Couldn't ask for a better group of weapons to break in a new QB.
