I always liked the Ft Thomas League how it was. These other leagues are are about winning and Ft Thomas League was about splitting the town into 4 teams and making it about learning the fundamentals. This league had rules about enclusion of kids and set defenses all the same so ALL the kids ( not just natural studs and coaches sons) could understand what is going on. It seems pansy or whatever, but it’s about teaching football to as many kids as possible.

 

That’s how the town of Fort Thomas had a huge freshman team. No kids were chased away from football. With all that retention we have a lot of late bloomers. I remember, of all the studs when I was in 5,6 grade none of them were playing varsity when I was a senior. I would have been ignored on the Red Devils ( I just didn’t know what it was all about my dad wasn’t into sports) and I ended up All Northern Ky team by the time I was a senior. That wouldn’t have happened without Ft Thomas Jr Football League.

 

I believe that our league is the foundation of 23 state championships. I think at 5th 6th grade the championships are for the dads. I like making the goal state championships at the high school level but that’s just me.

The FTJFL is still a very good organization and run by a great group of volunteers. However, they have had to make some changes due to the "war on football" and some declining participation. In speaking with the leadership, they are trying to keep things as much with tradition as they can, but only changing some things to be able to have games.

 

BCPWF, as rich in tradition as they have been, has had to make some big changes. CCYFL, although in infancy compared to these other programs, had no choice but to make changes to survive. If you love football, please continue to support your organization and the game of football.

As a long time fan of the NKYFL, I was pleased and excited to hear that FTJFL teams would be playing in the NKYFL. But based on what I've seen and heard, I think the FTJFL would be better served and much more competitive if they had two teams at each level (i.e. two 6th grade Junior teams and two 5th grade Junior Youth teams) rather than four teams of 5th and 6th graders combined. Just my two cents...

I always admired the Fort Thomas league for all the things you mentioned, and I agree that it was the prime reason for Highlands' success. I've witnessed a few years of a nephew and a year of my son playing in NKYFL, and winning seemed to always trump everything else. It is also the one sport that 'daddy ball' seems to be most apparent.

The undefeated Union Raider Junior team beat the undefeated Junior Spartans 38-0. Running clock before half.

 

Spartans got the #1 seed over the Union Raiders in the playoffs. I think it’s time for the NKYFL to consider a different way to seed!

In defense of Mills. There aren’t going to be any grass fields that aren’t professionally maintained and that host 10 games every weekend that are going to look good this time of the year with the amount of rain we’ve had in this area. Heck, there are more than a few high school fields that are in terrible shape right now. Also, Mills wouldn’t be used as much as it is, if the schools that do have turf fields didn’t charge high fees to the youth teams that would like to use them. If Mills wasn’t available, some youth teams wouldn’t have a place to play.

Mud and football go together. Mills football fields where in great condition at the beginning of the year. We had a lot of rain this summer. The fields have been water logged for a few weeks.

It’s hard to get a game at a High School this time of year. You’re competing against Varsity boys and girls regional soccer, district varsity football, and middle school football championships.
